V65SP or V7II
« on: April 18, 2022, 10:27:07 PM »
So I am looking for a bike that is just fun to ride, light, handles well and good for the back roads just like my 72 Daytona. I found a Stornello for a good price but the owner does not respond. I was looking at another V7 II for $3500 ( a bit cafe’d) until I saw a V65SP more practice than the Daytona, would that 650 be in the power range of a Triumph 650?
I looked at  a 2009 Bonnie SE it was beautiful but I had flashback’s about the horror of adjusting the valves not to mention the chain. He let me drive it and it seemed to be a Honda in drag. The magic that the vintage triumphs had was not there for me. I don’t want to insult any new Triumph owners.
How does the vintage small block compare to the newer models? It has the looks I would not do much Interstate driving but how does it pass when you are cruising at 75?
I know it is a vintage and you can’t expect 2016 performance from a 30+ year old machine. What’s the opinion on vintage small blocks? Any mods required if it is stock?

Moto Guzzi Breva 750. Or if you want more of a Cruiser style, then Nevada 750.

V65 is carbureted...the 750s are injected.

I had a v65sp, pretty cool bike, but by every mark I can think of, except perhaps looks/style, any modern SB from the Breva on up, is a better m/c.

I've got a 1984  V65C in the fleet, I love it. Something like 45-50hp,under 400lb. On the NYS Thruway it is turning 5200 rpm at 80 or so MPH. Probably a little left in it. It sounds like it would sit there all day, though.
Some of the later small blocks needed an extra hole drilled in the final drive to increase pinion oiling. I replaced the valves because they are suspect.

Hold on just a minute.....Drill an extra hole in the final drive??? Remove the "suspect" valves??? If I didn't know better that would surely scare me away. Please explain.

Ok, great bike, but not making 45-50hp.

More like 35-42.   But still easily cable of 80mph without any issue.
