The saga continues to get the Norge tagged in NM.
« on: April 29, 2022, 10:52:40 AM »
Still don't have a NM tag for the Norge. Due to the VIN# being under the tank is the problem. I was first told that I would could have a designated LEO come to my house since I have to take some pieces off the bike. When I checked with the two different Sheriff offices here only one would help me and I would have to bring the bike to the office (40 miles away) and June 15th is the soonest it could be done. The state police said 1.5 year waiting list. When I called MVD back with that information they said I would have to do it in their parking lot. Okay.
Before doing that I was getting the T-3 registered and I asked when I brought the Norge in if I could park it next to the building to get some wind and sun protection while removing what I needed to be able to slide the tank back. The site manager then said that I can't do that there because to read the VIN# there the vehicle has to be complete and if I have to remove anything from the bike to get to the VIN# I would then have a vehicle "that was not intact". So I am being told I will have to wait till June 15th. BTW it is suppose to be registered within 30 days of moving here. What a freaking PIA!

They don't just register the bike when you transfer for title? That's all I'm I've ever done. The exception is the Ambassador because it has a 5 digit VIN but even that usually doesn't have any issues because the title usually transfers state to state with ease.

You might call MVD Express. That's a commercial outfit. You would likely have to pay more, but they may be more accommodating.

That would be very frustrating!!  And it's a good reminder to me that I can never relocate out of state.  Too many bikes to transfer!!

All my bikes are registered in different states Ha!

When I ran into that problem in CA I took the bike to the DMV  and pulled all the parts required in the parking lot which satisfied the state.

You may be able to go to a dealership,(even a auto one), and find someone that is certified to verify #. May have to pay a fee or maybe not.

That is a real PIA dealing with the no loads at a DMV. Call your state legislature.
I moved from Florida to Georgia and I waited a year and a half for the lazy blank heads in Georgia to send the title after registering. I moved to Alabama after a year and a half in Georgia (never so happy to see a state disappear in my rear view mirror) and still no title from Ga. I had to call the state congressional rep several times about this. One week after the last call the title shows up in the mail.  I go to register my bike in Alabama and four days later the new Alabama title is in my hands.

Call your state legislature about this. That is what they are for. Very few people ever call, so if no one calls then there is no problem. It does help. I have made calls to the state reps about the Atlanta VA (the worst in the U.S.)  and it has always helped.

So your VIN is not engraved on the right side of the head stock?
In addition to the plate under the tank, my 1200 Sport had the VIN engraved on the head stock.

Here is a photo of the same thing on a Norge, I didn't catch the year of it though.

I was cleaning my Duc and my neighbor Bimmer owner that likes giving me a rash of .... pointed out my license tag sticker was out of date, WTF?   We checked and saw the we sent a check for a car and the Duc at one time but apparently only got the sticker for the car (or either I lost it).  So I fill out a form, write a letter and send them a check $11 for a duplicate sticker.....They've cashed the check but I've got no sticker yet.

I will look into the private for profit tag places. They may be a bit more flexible, I don't know. As far as I know dealers can't be of help.
In the meantime if none of that works I may give calling a legislator's office a try. If I get ticketed for the tag I will through myself to the mercy of the court. i cannot figure anyway to use a mirror and cannot see anything on the steering head and even if I did would then have to remove the fairing to see any detail. Thanks all for the suggestions.

I had a similar issue with the DMV here in Louisiana.
I had bought a new Saturn in 91 in Tenn.  About 4 weeks later I got a transfer to Louisiana.  Wife went in to transfer title and register, but the employee said we had to pay a huge fine for registering out of state and trying to keep from paying sales taxes.
I went in, got the same treatment, and literally called her incompetent in front of her supervisor and the whole packed office.

A day later, went to the State police and had a conversation with one of the officers and he took care of it for me, I didn't pay the fine or sales tax, as I had already paid the tax in Tenn and the car wasn't sold in LA.  No idea of what happened the incompetent that I dealt with.

Someone knows how to fix this, you just haven't that person yet.

good luck dealing with the government.

I had a similar fiasco in Florida years back.  Tried to register a Harley FXRT from out of state.  Same thing...gotta verify the VIN down at the DMV office.  But there was a problem.  My FXRT had been in an accident, and I took it to GMD Computrack in Georgia to have the steering head aligned (with less than acceptable results, I might add, for a lot of $$).  In the process, the Computrack boys heat the frame tubes, and burned the VIN decal to a crisp in the process.  So now the only frame VIN is on the steering neck, hidden by the faring support bracket.  No way to see it without a big dismantle job, one I wasn't about to do in the DMV parking lot!  Combining the frustrations of not being able to get the bike titled along with the front-end wobble the bike still had after Computrack's "work" I decided to sell the bike for parts.  I learned an expensive lesson that day: no matter what, when a bike is involved in an accident, get rid of it, repaired or not. Oh, and Thank God I now live in rational, red, Tennessee.

You have done everything they told you.I would ride with my old plate and if I got stopped explain the situation, most cops would give you a warning to follow up with DMV.The only other option is to not ride or ride the T3.

I never thought I would appreciate the RMV in Massachusetts. I titled two Canadian bikes, an untitled but registered VT bike and a Colorado bike out of an estate, all with two fairly quick trips to the Registry this month. Good Luck GliderJohn.

Glider,  I feel your pain. I just got my Norge (09', bought out of state) registered and licensed here in KY. I was lucky, the sheriff came to my house when I explained the tank had to be removed to see the vin. Actually it only needs to be pulled to the rear a couple inches. Nothing really needs to be disconnected. He checked the vin, lights, horn, odometer reading ect. That vin is located in a devil of a place 😱

When I bought my Breva from WA. State. I had to bring the bike to the DMV in Oregon to read the vin.. It was during the pandemic and everything was a total cluster. Almost everything on-line and had to make a appointment months out.. The one exception for walk-in's in my town's DMV (Best in Oregon) and I had the one thing they would do there, without a appointment. Read the vin, and also transfer my Oregon plate to the Breva,, Kept the plate off of my Aprilia ,and it allowed the stars to line up . 15 minutes from going to DMV had my reg, and title all set..  The Vin is in two places under the tank/seat area, and tucked in back of some cables on the steering head. Recently moved here from KS. Registered our car and PU w/o any problems. Tried registering our antique 1975 Moto Guzzi and was told that the VIN # is registered since 2018 in Indiana. I had the proper KS title and paperwork and have owned the bike since 1989 and I have known history since new. I was told it is a grey area and they did not know what to do. Could not register it.

Our second bike is a 2011 Moto Guzzi sport tourer. To read the VIN# the fuel tank has to be unfastened and moved back a couple of inches. This also requires removing the seat, two body panels and two engine heat shields. The Moriarty site supervisor told me that the vehicle has to be intact when reading the VIN# and if these parts have to be removed the vehicle is no longer intact and cannot proceed. She said this would require a "Category III" which so far I have only found can be done by the Torrance Co. Sheriff department which I cannot get a date until June 15th.

We want to comply with the laws here. Can your office offer any suggestions or assistance?
Thank you,
John and Ruth Peters

Same church different pew . Attempting to register my Centenario , Moto Guzzi doesn’t exist ! Presenting my reg from the other V7 fails to remove the fog from their eyes . After much “discussion “ I’m told it’s a Piaggio & Moto Guzzi is the model !
I’m glad to see Scout 63 had a better experience than I
Steve Rossi had a post about this a while ago . That deserves a tip of the helmet . Now if I can get the title for my V7II changed from V7LL !

I’d go to the DMV, remove the seat, panels and the tank. Then I’d install the panels, plop the tank back on, visibly unconnected and a few inches back to see the plate and the same with the seat. I’d also take a photo of the bike as stock and then go inside and ask for the inspection. What is the worse that can happen?

GliderJohn

Alabama was that way if you bought a bike from out of state that was used.  I pulled up with the new to me bike still in the bed of the truck in the rain and the lady decided she would just take my word for it.  LOL!

Another out of state bike from Kentucky was not filled out correctly according to Montgomery and got kicked back.  When I resubmitted with the Kentucky instructions on how it was to be filled out and showed that it was filled out correctly, they still kicked it back.  I had to talk the selling dealer into filling out the paperwork incorrectly to satisfy the bureaucrats in Montgomery.  LOL!

In Florida, I bought a New Jersey titled bike and the local LEO came to the house and verified the VIN because I couldn't legally ride it to the DMV to transfer the title and wasn't going to take the chance of riding without a plate.

I guess in NM they forget the "serve" part of "protect and serve".

Been on the phone with Indiana and NM for the last hour, mostly on hold. Indiana confirmed they do have a vehicle registered with the same VIN# but completely different vehicle, names, etc. Called NM office back with that information and they informed me they had just talked with Indiana and we can now proceed. Next appointment they have open is next Monday so will try again. BTW when I called NM office back the supervisor answered and has a heavy accent that is difficult to understand, When I asked her to repeat something she just hung up on me. Called back and got the clerk I worked with yesterday. Glad I am retired and have all this time to screw with this.
