Padded Motorcycle Shorts
« on: December 29, 2022, 12:28:16 PM »
Evening All

My Roamer gives me ass pain after an hour or so riding and I'm wondering whether to improve the padding on the seat or the padding  on my ass

Has anyone used padded shorts when riding their motorcycle Similar to these https://winxwheels.com/
If so what are the benefits and disadvantages

Cheers

For years, and for long, overnight trips, (meaning more than 5-6 hours in the saddle), I always wear "Bicycle Shorts"...with foam padding in the seat... and they work just fine... :thumb:   :boozing:

Sheepskins are  good as are bike shorts but it takes a while to toughen up your butt if you haven’t been riding for a few months.Motorcycles are never going to be as comfortable as cars on a long ride, regardless of the brand.

Interesting that you mention sheepskin as I have that already.
Would you say one is better than the other?

A friend who has been riding motorbikes for 50 years started wearing cycling shorts under his leathers about 10 years ago. He absolutely swears by them. But taking a piss is a bit of a bother.

I use bicycle shorts, no padding and an Airhawk cushion. The bike shorts eliminate any seams that may be present in most underwear. Seams can cause discomfort. The Airhawk with minimal air provides padding.

I rode to Custer NP and the Black hills with a candyass that swears by these   https://motoskiveez.com/product/adventure-skiveez/   It'll be a cold day in hell when I spend $72.00 for a pair of undies because my bum hurts a little.

Yeah, me too.  If you want to spend the money.  Go ahead.  I found that this works aspirin before a long ride.  Stretch and pop the back.  1 hour stretches in the saddle with short 5 minute breaks in between.   :boozing:

I can understand if you're on a 1 1/2" or 2 " thick seat but usually you wouldn't be using that bike for a long distance ride.

Yep.  More drugs is always the answer.  Next time try some edibles the night before, then pharmaceuticals before the ride, and Bourbon after the ride.  You might die younger, but you had fun and spent the $70 in a better way!

Yes yes and yes!

As for the shorts the key for me are the seams.

I wear an older version of these: https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/riding-gear/msr-padded-riding-short-p

Sort of like heavy duty bicycle shorts. Mine came with removable hip pads and I don't use those.

Air Hawk seat cushion here.  Doesn't raise you up much, because less air is better in these.

How does it compare to riding your other motorcycles?  Does the seat foam or shape seem to be worse than other bikes that are comfortable?  How about riding position, are you sitting at a different angle (leaning back or forward too much)?

I haven't ridden a Roamer, but on other bikes ...
- I'm not a fan of those air seat cushions, I know low air is way to go, but they always felt squishy and I didn't like how you move around a bit in the seat (like braking or hard acceleration or when leaning a lot)
- for my motos with good ergos and good seats, it doesn't matter what I wear.  Jean, moto pants, normal underware, anything works well.
- for my motos with horrible seats and/or bad ergos, almost nothing fixes it ... moto skiveez, gel bicycle shorts help a wee bit, but didn't solve the problem for me.  For a current "bad seat" bike, it was good for ~1 hr of riding ... so I ordered the "comfort seat" which brought it up to ~1.5 hrs ... then I paid ~$400 to have a seat specialty shop totally redo the stock seat, all new foam/cover, supposedly a world class place, that got it up to about a ~2 hr pain free ride.  With special shorts maybe it is ~2.5 hrs of pain free riding (that is shorts + the $400 fancy seat).  I still am a bit baffled why some of my other bikes are fine and this particular one is not.  Next step for me is bar risers to see if that will help.

You may be able to swap out for one of the newer thicker or an aftermarket seat, but I wear bicycle shorts with gel padding for long distance rides, saved my @$$ many a time, literally

My Breva 1100 I could ride until it ran out of fuel,  refuel and do it again no problem, so position on bike is important too me it would appear

I think that part of the problem is that I sit too upright on the Roamer, which has improved by rolling the bars forward somewhat.

It seems that a £30 investment on padded shorts is better than £300  on the seat at the moment.

Many options on Amazon.  Make sure on the fit and the padding for your butt cheeks.

What a bunch of pansies. I've been going commando since I started riding in '59. The next topic will be what is the best feminine deodorant spray to use.

Think I'll drink some more shine.
