Has anyone seen a 3D printed 22mm oil fill plug tool
« on: March 27, 2023, 10:05:50 AM »
Someone was making a 3D printed hand tool for smallblock oil fill/dipstick plugs.

Just curious if anyone has seen a 22mm hex version for big block motors??

Or should I just buy a Harbor Freight 22mm box-end and cut the handle down for easy carry

If you carry a 3/8 ratchet with you, you can get a 3/8 drive 22mm socket. Maybe Home Depot, Amazon does have it.

I am looking for something compact for my little tankbag. I am currently using a big impact socket from a lug nut set and a foot-long 1/2' drive ratchet..

I think the cheap-o 22mm box end cut down stubby will be the eventual answer for me.  I have an outsider with custom dipstick drilled thru the plug, so don't want to swap the plug out for something other than that 22mm hex plug

You could find an original Guzzi "dog-bone" wrench which has a 22 mm box end (and usually a 24 or 27 on the other end). In the past I've just bought a cheap 22 mm (or 7/8") wrench and cut it off.

Then I got smart and just bought "finger twist" dipsticks.

A guy near Jackson, Ohio made these. I will look through my stuff and see if I have a name. I don't think he does them for a business, but I bought some V7 filters from him and he made these for me. Forgive the Triumph logo, my wife bought me several Triumph items when I had my Trophy so it has a sentimental value.

I would go this route, but I have a Harper's outsider on the block...  Was thinking I might be able to use the 'extender' model but leave the extension off? Would need to measure carefully and in my experience, MG cycle are prickly about returns if it doesn't work out.

I see a stubby wrench in my future

EDIT: Ouch! $66 for an oil fill plug/dipstick! YIKES

Those are for the smallblock/V7/Convert ATF tank plastic cap/dipstick, not 22 mm.

They were about half that cost when I bought mine.

If you want to sketch what you want I'll do a little design and print one for you to try. Printer not busy at the moment as other projects on the go.

I'm not sure 3D printed plastic is up to loosening (and tightening) an original filler plug/dipstick adequately. Maybe if it had an o-ring on it like the small-block one, but it needs to be fairly tight with a crush washer or even fiber washer to keep from leaking.

This seems to be an easy enough design and print. I'm not around my ringer this week but could probably sort something next week if the other person above doesn't get it.

There was a bloke in Australia making these about 4 or 5 years ago. It works well. It has my phone number printed into it which is nice. I can't find his details now though.

There's another bloke in Ballarat been advertising these recently for $30.

My friend made me one on his 3D printer almost the same as the bottom photo.

I believe the code was posted here on W.G. some time back. Goes great. He extended the handle a bit over the original but it still fits in my riding jacket pocket.

I was thinking about that O-ring last night Charlie..  I could probably put one on my plug, but I think your hunch is right, to make a plastic wrench stout enough for the task, it might have to be unnecessarily thick/bulky.

I am going with my original thought and cut down a cheap 22mm wrench.

I used this one last year and it's great. Sent the file to a friend with a 3D printer and he did a few for me. I've used it 5 or 6 times and it's provides enough torque to tighten the cap and appears to be very strong.

I made a paper template and transferred it to a piece of 1/4" plastic.  A bit of time in the shop with a fret/coping saw and here is the double ended result.  Not pretty, but completely functional.

This is what my mate printed for me but it's the 27mm version

Like mr_pacman said - it's plenty strong, but I tend to only use it to release and not tighten

From that model thought, your favourite CAD jockey should be able to offset the size of the hex to come up with a 22mm version for printing ...... unless its some random number of flats that is

These (several have been posted in this thread) only fit the V7 (smallblock) oil cap

The one for the older big blocks is a 22mm hex bolt

I think that is the one my friend printed off for me Charlie.  Goes really well and no trouble in the strength department.

My "may not be strong enough" comment was made in reference to 3D printing one to work on a 22 mm hex that Mayor_of_BBQ was asking about, not the small-block oil plug/dipstick. The difference is the small-block dipstick has an o-ring so requires much less torque to seal vs. the 22 mm dipstick with fiber or alloy crush washer which requires considerably more.

A friend 3D printed these for me. Works on the Convert ATF tank dipstick as well.

Hey all figured I'd chime in, Austin from Indiana (the Indiana rep) I print these along with a ton of other kinda useful Guzzi parts. I brought a bag of them to a few rallies last year and plan on bringing them to all the ones I am going to this year. Not pictured is a long handled "thumb" screw type opener. I had requests from guys that wanted shop use ones with longer handles so I designed a couple. I tried the hex cap plugs which is what is on my G5 but figured most people had a wrench like I do under my seat. If it is a requested item I can definitely look at revisiting it?
I haven't looked into shipping them but I could definitely look into costs of there is a few people looking to get these that won't be attending any of the same rallies I will be.
Just to also kinda promote it, I also do custom work, I am pretty handy with 3d modeling and have a few different types of 3d printing processes along with access to a cnc milling machine and fabrication skill. If interested you're more than welcome to shoot me a message or can email whichever works best.
Thanks!

Not really answering the original topic question
But in the 80’s a lot of older Guzzis had broken off dipsticks, glueing them in with araldite or jb weld was common as was finding a dipstick in sump when changing filters
The factory fixed the problem

img en html

Has added bonus of o ring seal and tool free use.
Cheap as chips and easy to cut down for no sump extension

Actually easier than one might think:  once the paper template is transferred to the plastic protective paper, drill out the outer points with a small drill bit;  drill out the inner part of the plastic with a hole saw;  finish off the curved parts with a fret/coping saw followed by a bit of sandpaper wrapped around a small stick.
