California 1400 Drive shaft replacement at 43000 miles

Hello,

I purchased a California Custom with around 36,000 miles on it and I love it. I’ve noticed that the manual calls for a drive shaft replacement at 43,000 miles. I would think that the drive shaft would be bulletproof proof and would last longer. Has anyone else with higher mileage replaced theirs at that point or is it more of a “recommendation” from the manufacturer?

Hopefully one of the dealers who watches this site will join in.  I am on my 2nd 1400 and would like to know that answer too.

sounds like CYA to me. Never replaced a drive shaft on the Cal 11's, Cal 3, and EV's that I put over 100K on each one.

LOL geesh yes they're right on line 1. I was looking for it around the FD oil change. Sad really because a good chain will almost last that long.

1996 Sport 1100.  Replace drive shaft every 12,000 miles.  Every 9,000 miles if Subject to high speed sporting use








Needless to say, I never replaced the drive shaft in 30,000 miles of mainly sporting use, and I don't know anyone who has.

What does the (8) mean. How about it means replace the 8/ rubber buffers in the rear housing.

(8) is a reference to the notes section, number eight.

There are only notes 1-7 though.

(1) Check and clean and adjust or replace, if necessary, before every journey.
(2) Replace every 2 years or 20000 Km (12427 mi).
(3) Replace every 4 years.
(4) Check at each engine start.
(5) Periodic lubrication of the stand with spray grease is recommended after particularly hard use (dirt from salt, dust, etc.) or after long periods of inactivity.
(6) Lubricate if you are riding in the rain, on wet roads or after the vehicle has been washed.
(7) Replace at whichever of the following occurs first: 40000 km (24854 mi) or 4 years

I really appreciate everyones input on this. This is my first post to this forum. Needless to say the bike runs perfectly and I think I’m just going to go with the typical fluid changes and valve adjustments on that maintenance table. If I run into other Guzzi questions and curiosities I def know where to post. If anyone is in the Central Texas area I’ll probably run into you sooner or later.

I'll be on my Cal 1400T.  Richard from PHX will be there also.  He put a huge number of miles on his Cal 1400T.  I don't think he replaced the drive shaft.  You can ask him.  He'll be on his V100S.  Look for the AZ plates.

For what it is worth, my T-3 drive shaft has 109,000 on it and I don't baby it.

nah.  I think they mean what they say.  My Sport 1100 manual specifically says to grease the driveshaft every 1500 miles.  Every 600 miles if ridden hard.  Inspect the drive shaft every 3,000 miles.  Replace the driveshaft every 12,000 miles.  Every 9,000 miles if mainly sporting/high speed use.

Pretty insane, as  the driveshafts last forever on the spine frame bikes if lubed regularly.

Don't seem to remember anything for the Beemers that I've owned.  Only service and inspection.
