lemans 1000 7/33 on a loop
« on: June 14, 2023, 04:48:27 PM »
gentlemen of the guzzi cognesenti here is my question -

ambassador 750 engine with an 1100 5-speed box and a LM 7/33 rear drive and swingarm - does that sound like a good combination?

(got a loop I'd like to rebuild and trying not to buy too many new parts)

and here's my second question, will the LM 7/33 mate up to the loop rear drum brake wheel?

The Le Mans 1000 has a longer swingarm and may cause clearance issues with the fender and/or require different shocks.

I have a long mk 4 swinging arm on my 67 loopy, std fender no dramas
Yes, slightly longer shocks are wise, mine have ride height adjustment , useful when one plays with stuff.

And Charlie, clue was in thread title —— Le Mans 1000, all had long arms

thanks guys,

got most of it lined up on the bench today

can I use the loop swingarm?

750 engine + cali 5 speed gearbox + the original loop swingarm + lemans1000 rear drive?

No, you'll need a later swingarm. Why? The flange on the pinion carrier of 7/33 rear drive is 2 mm thicker than that of a Loop rear drive. If you bolt the 7/33 onto the Loop swingarm, and try to install the rear axle, you'll find the rear axle is cocked at an angle.

thinking about this some more, (always a good step before diving in)

would the 750 engine be happier pushing a LM5 gearbox swingarm and rear drive?

Which 5 spd. or swingarm you use is going to make very little difference.

thanks Charlie,

so the cali 1100 5 speed and rear drive won't be geared too high for the 750??

I'm not looking for performance here, plan is to build a comfy 2-up rider.

I'm not looking for performance here, plan is to build a comfy 2-up rider.

Cal 1100 gear ratios:
1st 1:2 (Z=14/28)
2nd 1:1.3889 (Z=18/25)
3rd 1:1.0476 (Z=21/22)
4th 1:0.8696 (Z=23/20)
5th 1:0.7500 (Z=28/21)

Ambassador 4 speed gear ratios:
• Low gear 1 to 2.230 (13-29)
• Second gear 1 to 1.333 (18-24)
• Third gear 1 to 0.954 (22-21)
• High gear 1 to 0.750 (24-1)

7/33 rear drive = 4.714 to 1
8/37 rear drive = 4.625 to 1
8/35 rear drive = 4.375 to 1
8/33 rear drive = 4.125 to 1

So, if using a Cal 1100 transmission and 7/33 rear drive, the over all gearing will be lower than the stock Ambassador gearing. A stock Ambassador engine will have no problem with that gearing. An 8/33 rear drive will be a bit too tall for a stock Ambassador engine though, IMO.

All stock parts on an Ambassador works good too.

yes, I did the same calculations the 8/33 is too tall. Also, after experiementing ion the garage a bit today, the Cal 1100 swing arm doesn't actually seem to fit either. The bracing on the non-drive side fouls the passenger peg part of the frame.

Problem is... I do have 7/33 and lemans swingarm but its about 700 miles away from the eldo!

hmmmm

thanks for the info
