If you have a coloured past, you may need a few more documents.  And permission.

Coming from US, I never had Canada ask for anything beyond an ID. I always presented a passport. They ask my vehicle plate number because they can't see it from the booth. And that's it. (Unless you are a smart a**. They have no sense of humor)

Once my wife and I faced a line of traffic getting in at h the Soo.When we got the green light we road up to the booth together,a no no and I had to push my loaded bike back to the line. When I got to the booth the guard wanted to know where Inwas going and my purpose.I said we were going to the Ontario rally to camp for the weekend. He then asked what I was carrying I had to think and blurted out tools, camping gear, clothes and my drugs. He checked out my pony tail and beard and waved me through, figuring nobody who looked like me would bring any contraband.

If you were ever convicted of a felony they won't let you in. FYI, they consider a DWI a felony.

I had one entry when the agent asked me if I was carrying any guns.  He enhanced his questioning and asked the same thing three times.  On the third he also warned me that lying would be a cause for arrest.  I had to emphasize NO before he let me through.  Don't bring a gun.

If I recall when we crossed the US/CAD border in addition to where are you going, for how long, do you have an firearms, drugs, tobacco, alcohol they also asked if we were carrying any fruits or vegetables. I thing it was either oranges or bananas specific.

No weapons.
No felonies.
No cannabis.  While it is legal to possess in places like Ontario, it is still illegal to transport pot across international boundaries.
No attitude - as mentioned the Border Services folk have no sense of humour.  And they're armed.

Proper ID.

When the border agents ask for your plate # they already know it & have run a warrant check ! Done by computerized cameras a click or two up the road ! It’s a truth test

I never remember it. 3 bikes with nondescript numbers. I always have to get off and walk around back to check.

The main thing to remember is that it is a sovereign country with different laws, and vastly different politics and culture.  Non-residents are welcomed as visitors,  but have no right of entry. Permission to enter is at the discretion of the border guards.

I was in school in Rochester New York  55 years ago. Going over the border into Canada was common dating procedure then. The issue used to be getting back into the US. Canada welcomed us with open arms. But we were different 55 years ago.  :embarrassed:

I crossed in Calais in March heading up to Halifax to buy two project Laverdas. I made the mistake of answering honestly and telling Canadian customs that I had over $10,000 in cash on me.  It took half an hour for a very polite  but sufficiently armed Ken doll to count every cent I had.  He then told me I could throw the form he gave me away. On the way back over the US border at midnight the same day the US agent waved me through after looking at two disassembled bikes in the trailer. Sometimes it’s good when people don’t know anything about motorcycles.

The truth is best. With a twist that favors Canada....  "My company is looking at machinery made in Canada" sort of thing. But do not lie about what you have or where you are going.
I'd be interested in knowing about the requirement for a passport, thats very inconvenient and expensive now.  It used to be good to cut across to get to New York, that might not be so easy now.

Newest info I've seen says I can come into Canada by land with my "REAL ID Drivers License" issued by Massachusetts.  No passport required. They stated a "REAL ID" would be equally acceptable. Guess "REAL" is a federal standard.

You need a passport since 9/11.

Entry requirements.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/entry-requirements-country.html#us-citizens

REAL ID was passed in 2005. Though states seem to keep pushing the end line out on it. If you have a gold star in the upper corner of your driver's license you have a real ID. You need it to fly.

Thanks for the tipoff. Just noticed my passport died last July. Funny thing is they let me into Canada with it as sole identification last September. It was nice they let me in (and back stateside too). Would be nice if someone mentioned it was renewal time. Guess it's off to the Post Office tomorrow.

I think you're also allowed to use a "Passport Card" - but only if you're entering and exiting
by land or sea. You still need a Passport to fly in and out of Canada.

You will find Canada to be uncrowded, I am biased living near the Rockies,  but especially riding in south central British Columbia is a riders paradise, beautiful paved two lane mountain roads, very little traffic, friendly and very safe small towns with reasonably priced accommodation. I highly recommend the trip from Calgary to Banff, then Lake Louise, then over to Radium, head south to highway3, then head for Nelson in British Columbia, head north to Kaslo, cross over to the east to Nakusp, then back down to Nelson. You can head over to Vancouver via highway 3.
Canada is very safe, very little violence. You will always feel welcomed in Canada.
