Norge oil changes
« on: July 25, 2023, 10:03:33 AM »
Would be easy peasy if it was not such a PITA to put oil back into it. What they hell were they they thinking when they designed it? All you have is that little hole where the dipstick goes to fill through to fill through. Have found the best method is a pump that screws on a qt. oil bottle then put the little hose through the little hole and pump only a few hundred times. Have to hold the bottle tilted with one hand and pumping with the other. Empty bottle, make further mess changing to a new bottle, etc. Geezz! Okay, my rant of the day of first world problems.

I found a Harbor Freight gizmo for $9  that both sucks out and will put back in oil sump hose.

You can do this a lot easier.  Loosen the left hand fairing to gently pull it back a little bit and with a large socket, undo the Plastic threaded portion that the dipstick locks into.  It's not very tight at all being a plastic part, so it takes very little to break it free. Now you have a large hole to fill with a long necked flexible funnel.  Oil goes in about 2 minutes this way...retighten the threaded piece, re-attach the fairing.

Easy peasy!

I loosen the lower and use a very long funnel, start & top up, button up lower. I don't try to go through the hole. I used to cut those holes in ones that had none, early Norge's.

Get piece of pvc about 14” long that smaller in diameter then the top of the drain plug. Cut a notch in one end that will go over the flat finger tab on the dipstick end. Wrap a bit of electrical tape on each side of the cut. Now go behind the bodywork, push the cut and wrapped end onto the finger tab and spin it loose. Then the tape helps hold the tab in the slot of the tube you cut and pull the dipstick out. Tried to be clear. If your interested in a picture let me know.

When filling I use a turkey baster in the hole of the bike and a funnel into the baster. This takes forever to fill though.

My Norge is an ‘07 which I bought new.
Suffice to say I’ve had it 17 years and it’s had the dipstick extension accessory for all that time.

You can see it right near the spark plug.
The oil has been changed 21 times and I always fill it through the dipstick tube.
The inner diameter of the tube is about 1/2” and there’s no drama filling it.
Just an empty 1 litre Motul 80W90 container with the plastic pull out spigot, like this one

 stuck into the dipstick tube.
Hang the container from the left handlebar, add 1 litre of oil and go do something else.
It takes about 2 minutes to dump a litre, so repeat 3 times…
Done…!

It's easy.  Dipstick out, unscrew the piece that holds the dipstick from the engine ( it's 26 mil if memory serves, but it comes right out) and there's a nice sized hole for a long funnel.  Attach the part by screwing it in, plug in the dipstick, and Bob's your Uncle.

Was just pointing out how easy it is.  I struggled with it until one ride to Hamlin's for service (major) and he showed me what he does.  Easy as anything from that point on.

That's what I do as well since I'm usually checking the valve clearance at the same time.
