V85tt key cloning
« on: July 26, 2023, 11:48:08 AM »
Quick question.
Is it possible to clone a V85tt key if you have an original?

Also, what's the brand of the Alu luggage that comes with it, and where can I get news keys.
I do not like not having spares and the dealer only had one set.

AF1 Racing can clone MG keys. I think it’s about $40 and you get a generic chipped key

Thanks.
I was at the dealer picking it up when I learned the bike only comes with a single copy of the ignition and luggage keys.
I don't like not having a spare, at all.

I did a quick lookup online while there and it came up as a replacement kit for 300$...
Just a new key will work.

Can't find that luggage key though, I'd rather get a copy made than replace all 6 cylinders.

Obtaining an 'official' spare ignition key for a V85TT is a three step process:

1) Buy a blank chipped key, something like $60 from Piaggio as a non-stocked special order item if I remember correctly, and BTW made by a supplier in Pakistan.

2) Get the new replacement chipped key cut to match your existing key by a locksmith.

3) Take the bike and key to a current Guzzi dealer and have him match it to the bike using a dealer-only electronic tool.

Lots of hassle and expense to do something that was much easier on earlier model bikes.  For me getting a spare ignition key involved $150 total spent at three separate businesses, including a dealer appointment set weeks in advance because I wanted the key matched while I waited.

MyTech is the the OEM luggage manufacturer in Italy:

https://en.mytechaccessories.it/product-category/baggage/lateral-motion-suitcases/?swoof=1&pa_motorbikes=moto-guzzi-v85tt&really_curr_tax=484-product_cat

You can get spare luggage keys (and locks) from AF1.  Since blanks for the special luggage key type cannot be cut by a normal locksmith they order them by the code number from MyTech.  The code is written on the lock and if the dealer did his setup job correctly (many don't) all bags on the bike will have the same lock and key code.  My order BTW came in with an incorrect transposed key code the first time, a screw up in Italy missed by AF1 before shipment, but was resolved OK in the end.  Again, more hassle.

I rarely take the ignition key out of my TT, have no interest in RFID keys, 'selecting a personal code' or any other Piaggio features related to theft prevention... I don't even want a locking gas cap on my bikes, but this is what we have.

Did you buy new?  My bike came with two ignition keys plus the number tag.  Also with six keys for the MyTech luggage.

My V85TT had 1700 miles on it when I bought it, the previous owner traded it in and passed only one ignition key to the dealer, and previously the original dealer did not set up the three bags with one key code before delivery of the new bike.  So all that needed to be sorted out by me, starting out by tracking down the original owner who told me he’d thrown all the spare keys in the trash.  Apparently dropping them off at the dealer 5 miles from his house was too much hassle.  He did have a few other odds and ends.

These things do happen as often as not, and ever more so as the bikes age. The only good part is that the kind of guy who trades in a bike with 1700 miles on a new BMW, forgetting about the spare keys in doing so, is also the kind of guy who accepts huge depreciation.  My BMW dealer friend can then sell the bike to his only Guzzi-nut friend very inexpensively leaving some budget to fix the innumerable issues.

Just don’t buy one with no keys plus no ‘personal code’ unless it’s  very, very cheap. The dealer won’t be able to make you a coded key.

No. It's a 2020 with 6000 miles on it.
The dealer only had the one starter key and one luggage key from the PO.
He told me they can copy the ignition key chip, so that's going to be OK, and with the help of a previous post maybe I can have a copy of the luggage key made without having to replace all 6 locks

If your luggage key has a number on it tell us what it is. I have a bunch of luggage keys from my two bikes and would be happy to send you one as would others. Smart thing to do is change the locks so they don't need a key. That way you only need one for removal from the bike.

The number on it is 7594
It's machine stamped and I'm assuming it's like a serial number.
My hope was that if I could find the manufacturer, they could just sell me a copy they could make based on that unique number... but that might be wishful thinking.  :undecided:

7920, 7435 are what I have.
When I travel I bring a bike cover for the night so nobody gets curious and a paper thin nylon bag to put the next days clothes pre-packed in a zip lock bag, shaving kit and c-pap machine. Beats hauling all the bags up for no reason.

That is exactly what MyTech can do.

I would ask the dealer to contact the first owner and request the extra set of keys.

The dealer is working on it. They have the equipment  and gear to make proper keys.

one important part left out of this thread is when you are adding new OEM keys, you MUST know the user code and visit a dealer to get them added.  This is true on any of the TFT dash models -- V85, V100, new aprilias.

The dealer needs the USER CODE to add any new OEM key.  User code come set as 00000 from MG, but can be set to anything by the owner.  The only way to reset the USER CODE is to have both original keys.  Clones dont work as key #2 in this case, since a clone is a chip copy.  Every OEM key has a different chip.  Dash needs two different keys to reset user code.

If you do not have the USER CODE and a dealer, cloning is your only option for spares unless you want to buy a new dashboard.   The comment above about clones being worthless is wrong.  The only time a key (clone or otherwise) is deleted is during the learning process of new keys at a dealer with the USER CODE.  At that point, it could be added right back to the system during a key relearn just like the original key.

We can clone V85 keys, no problem.  $40 special blank, chip, and cut.    Getting spare keys for the Adventure metal bags has to come from MyTech, and they are VERY VERY slow to deliver.  Those are ordered by key codes.

My V85TT will never in my ownership have the user code set to anything other than 00000.  That way I cannot forget it, and any dealer knows the code because when the ignition is turned on the display flashes ‘insert user code’ for a few seconds, indirectly notifying anybody looking at it that the user code is set to 00000.   That will be equally true if/when I’m dead and nobody can find the keys.

I have zero need for the chipped key and secret code security feature and wish it hadn’t been designed into the bike.  Leaving the code set to 00000 is the closest I can get to eliminating the system’s pitfalls.  It’s an absolutely stupid setup when considering the whole, long life cycle of a motorcycle and not just the dealer and first owner.

I do BTW appreciate AF1s detailed interest and persistence in helping sort out these really unfortunate key issues on used bikes they didn’t sell.  Ed and company were key (pun intended) to getting my bike sorted out.  I now have two OEM keys (one spare) and one key code for all three bags (with multiple spare luggage keys). I’ll now wait to see how long before one of the chipped keys fails, necessitating more cost and hassle someday.
