Which penetrating oil ?
« on: July 31, 2023, 07:53:18 AM »
I keep Liquid Wrench and Kroil on the shelf.  WD-40 works well for removing road grime and stickers.    :boozing:

What say you ?

Always used PB Blaster back in my wheelchair repairing days. Seems like we always had stuck bolts then, probably from "bodily fluids"  :sad: We always called PB Blaster "Panther piss" Used some in the garage yesterday!  :thumb:

---> Team Kroil

PB blaster works pretty good but stinks
Seafoam penetrant is as good as PB but doesn't stink
WD-40 is good for plastic headlights and arthritis

If only Kroil was easier to keep around.
Something wistful and amusing, yet poignant.

I use Liquid Wrench, been using it for decades. It used to be a little better back in the day when it had Wintergreen oil in it. Maybe it just smelled good. Project Farm also rated it very highly.

   I worked 35 years in the maintenance department of a corrugated box factory. I found Knock er' Loose by CRC worked better than any of the above mentioned. And, it smells good.

Lawson Kwikee Penetrant, if you've still got some. Da bums discontinued it, so you know it was good. Glad I grabbed a dozen cans when I was able to.

The book How To Restore Tractor Magnetos recommends the penetrating oil Maltby Ferret.

In the book (published almost 30 yrs ago) a salesman sold the shop a case of Maltby Ferret for re-sale.  The shop couldn't sell it, so they gave it to the mechanics in back.  Amazingly, it was better than sesame seeds on a bun, almost working by itself to free bolts.  They used up the case, but never heard from the salesman again.

I did a search, and it appears the company is on it's last legs, and has dropped "ferret" from their name.  They formerly made a few auto chemicals, but the penetrating oil is now their last product.

Joe

Edit:  Web search pulled up a 1970 advertisement in Popular Mechanics for Ferret by Maltby Chemical, so it really was called "Ferret", at least back then.
