***STOLEN*** V7iiii Rough (Los Angeles)
« on: February 02, 2024, 07:51:03 PM »

This is not how I wanted to make my first post on the forum. Stolen last night…

Ended up spending the night at the girlfriend’s house. It was parked in, steering locked, in front of her car in the driveway. In the morning the bike was gone… It has always lived inside in a garage full stop. This was one of the only nights in the bikes life it was parked outside. A little over a 1000 miles and it looks like a brand new bike. I’m pretty devastated to say the least.

Keep an eye out, and if by any miracle you see it, don’t hesitate to give me a call or text immediately: 907.231.1721

I knew the crooks in Cali were getting bold, but what are they going to do with a Guzzi.

Report it, call your insurance agent, prepare to get violated again by the carrier, and go find her replacement.

My daughter lives in Tucson and tells me that anything that isn’t nailed down is stolen. Here on the outer Cape Cod I haven’t locked a house in 60 years, even when on vacation. You can always tell the washashores because they lock their houses and cars.

Best of luck and welcome to the forum Oceanic. It’s a great place.

That totally sucks.  I have had a car stolen and my home broken into over my life.  Truly a feeling of violation.  I also know you probably
don't want to hear this right now but it could be much worse.  You didn't happen upon them when theft was in progress and avoided
any possible violence.  Instances like this can go sideways fast.  You didn't crash and tear up your body.  You are physically whole and
will take steps to replace the bike.  As a buddy of mine said at the time regarding my car theft  "The manufacturers make new ones every day."
In future would recommend:  1. Dark color bike cover/at night can make it difficult to see the bike  2. Disc lock with alarm (make some noise/thieves
don't like noise)   3. Chain to physically attach the bike to a secure anchoring point.   None of these are foolproof, but insurance data suggest that
every step you take will aid in making the bad guys move onto easier prey.  Look forward to you putting this behind you and more pleasant
postings on this forum in the future.  Hang in.

I had 3 Hondas stolen back in the 70s in Chicago,at the time I would have welcomed the possibility of violence catching them in the act.Sorry for your loss.

If you have full coverage insurance get a check from the insurer go buy a new bike and move on. Having had a vehicle stolen in the past and having it recovered if it ever happens again hope it is not recovered.

If you don't have full coverage that is a whole different can of worms.

I have owned and ridden some 34 bikes of all shapes, makes, and sizes over my 56 years of motorcycling...

Back in the day, at the tender age of 23, I had my one and only bike stolen, my virtually brand new, black 1978 Yamaha XS-750 from an apartment complex in Austin, TX.  Never saw it again, and the DPS officer taking the report told me:  "That bike by now...is somewhere in Mexico..."

With the insurance money, I bought a brand new 1978 Moto Guzzi 850 Le Mans...and the rest, as they say, is history.... :thumb:  :boozing:

JJ really hit the jackpot.

In 197, I think I paid about $3800, (brand new), for that Le Mans...Rode it around the Hill Country of Texas before taking another job and moving to NORCAL.  Then, I sold it to an engineer before moving to AZ in 1980.  Should have kept that one...

In 1967 I had a S 90 Honda stolen from my locked courtyard in the Philippines (probably the best everyday rider I ever owned). In 1980 had a '79 Silverado Chevy stolen off my driveway (8,000 miles) in Tyler, TX. I understand your pain!!!

Pretty much only weird thefts. Had a Dodge Colt in the 80s that I added an under dash equalizer/FM that quit working after a couple of years. Got in to go work one morning and someone had stolen it but nothing else. Had an inside rearview mirror stolen out of an Accord (both in my driveway). Had a Suzuki GS400 in my early riding days parked behind my house out of sight from the street. Someone took the shifter lever and my right mirror. Lost two helmets also in the past. One just had the strap cut with the remains still in the lock.

Sorry to hear that it happened the one time you parked outside, that's a real bummer.

Like others have mentioned, as long as the motorcycle was insured for theft then you likely do not want the bike back after it's been stolen. There's usually pretty bad damage to such a bike, steering lock, VIN ground off, etc. It will make any future resale a pain as well.

Heres an article about what’s going on with insurance in California right now. I had been trying to get a policy for months…

https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/losangeles/news/auto-insurance-companies-pull-out-of-california/

I am a Captain and have a busy schedule moving boats around Southern California. I have barely rode the bike at all since I bought it because I couldn’t buy insurance even if I wanted to. I’m not home in time to do all the snail mail hoops they are trying to get me to jump through just to buy a policy. It’s crazy. I have the attitude of take my money and insure me but it just doesn’t work that way any more. Getting a new insurance policy in CA is super difficult right now.

Anyways so no insurance means the bike was a total loss. It took me over half a year to find this bike and in the end I had to purchase it in Ohio and have it shipped because I couldn’t find one closer. Hard to find the Roughs for sale anywhere.

This last week has been tough.

Exacty 1 week after my bike was stolen I woke up again at my girlfriend’s place to find that my lifted 2005 AWD Chevy Astro van had been stolen as well. Inside were all my tools for the boat work I do, 4 surfboards/wetsuit, my brand new snowboard/gear, (I had just returned from Mammoth for a few days of riding to take my mind off my bike getting stolen) my road bike, and most of my personal belongings. I basically live out of this van as I’m constantly driving all over Southern California to take care of my clients.

I built this van up myself from stock and it was a beast. I feel so violated and personally attacked. They didn’t just take my vehicles, they took away my ability to get anywhere and my ability to do any of the activities that I love. The van had liability coverage. So again another total loss.

I’m currently in my garage working on an unfinished road bicycle project so that I don’t have to walk or take Ubers to get everywhere.

If any of you sharp eyed Guzzi guys sees either of my vehicles call me. My number is in the first post. I’d really appreciate it.

Sorry for your troubles.

It's rare for a Guzzi to be stolen. Your van isn't exactly like a pimp my ride and I need to be stolen. In my opinion this is deliberate, not a random theft.

So unless your staying in a really bad neighborhood . I'm thinking your new GF has an ex that has it in for you.

To grab your bike quietly would have taken at least two or 3 people if I understand right how it was parked. Not sure for the van.

Best of luck and I'd be watching my back as well as running like heck from your GF. Be careful!!!

Do you have renter's or homeowners insurance? That would cover your bike, boards, gear, tools... at least you could recover enough to continue to work. The police won't do the work, but see if neighbors have camera footage.  Good luck. I have lost one motorcycle to theft, 40 years ago, and it still pisses me off today. Violated is a good starting point.

I met a sailor last week while in Florida.  I asked where he was stationed and he went on a rant about how awful it is being stationed in California.

Maybe this is sign that it is time to move on to something else in another state.

With all the issues that California has (mostly political) I would have a hard time justifying any place else.  One just needs to get out of the Bay Area/LA area and there is a whole lot of open space with not too many people.  But back to the subject at hand, Very sorry to hear about your things getting stolen...That sucks...
