Breather hose on V7 Sport
« on: April 17, 2024, 07:43:45 PM »
Most folks with V7 Sports have replaced the breather hose that runs from the engine down the left side then under the bike. Why?  Because the originals have become as crumbly as a saltine over 50 years.  MG Cycle sells a Gates "replacement" hose  with an ID of 1/2" and OD of 3/4".  Although the ID does fit its connection from above with the oil breather, the hose is too big in its OD to pass through the hole under the frame. There does not seem to be a hose available for this which would need a 5/8" OD.  But you can get a hose with a smaller OD of 5/8" and an ID of 3/8".  So I spliced two hoses together, the larger coming from above and the smaller for the portion that goes under the frame using a brass connector.  You can see the splice in the photo below.

I use this hose: https://www.mcmaster.com/5235K55/ It's soft and flexible enough that it can be greased up and inserted through the metal holder fairly easily. I cut the end at a sharp angle which aids in inserting it through the holder.

Great info! I ordered one.  It must be a lot softer than Gates rubber if you were able to cut the end at a sharp angle.

It's non-reinforced hose (no fiber strands molded in) so is easy to cut.

I received the Buna-N rubber hose today and it fit just as you said, thanks again!
