FWIW, I find the 1100 EV/Cali to be quite low in the seat and very easy to manage, despite the weight. In other words, they carry their weight very well.

Has paint damage on the tank, so maybe you can knock another $500 off. That would get you to 3800 miles for $3500.

For what I understand your looking for, a 1100 Cali type would not fit the bill. I have an '04 EVT. I hate it around town. I LOVE it on the highways. The last time I tipped it over, I could not right it by myself. They are a fairly top heavy bike. It rides great, but making a U turn is a chore because it has a very narrow fork stop to stop compared to my Loops and even my R75/5 or HD. I want to turn the bars a bit more and can't. That is why I tipped it over, slow speed in a parking lot and hit fork stop and to correct, needed a bit more travel.

You really might want to look at the V7 series. I do not own one, but I have test ridden a few. Not too heavy, not too tall. Solo it will take you down the road at 70mph or more. But.......

I would run like heck from a '16 model, maybe even '15. Some had issues with the crankshaft thrust washers. If it does, not a cheap fix. Everything before and after, are decent solid bikes.

Hope this helps a bit,
Tom

I'm not a fan of threads that just peter out with no resolution.

So in the interest of SOME degree of closure—to this chapter, anyway—the seller of the Nevada got a deposit on the bike from a guy at the Meltdown (Hendersonville, NC) yesterday. https://www.tonuphighlands.com/
The buyer's scheduled to come back up from SC today and finalize the deal.

I'm still on the quest.

You snooze you lose.

Yep."He who hesitates is lost."
But also, "Look before you leap." Finding the golden mean between those two can be tough!

I also think it's a "loss" to buy quickly, if you're not positive about the purchase. The Nevada was close but not exactly right. I couldn't quite shake the '80s Virago memories it evoked....

...In 1971 I had a chance to buy an Ambassador for 1000$ but I couldn’t decide.

According to the Internetz, that's $7700 in "today dollars." I get the hesitation!

The last time I tipped it over, I could not right it by myself. They are a fairly top heavy bike.

I have crashed more bikes than I have dropped, but the only one dropped that caused serious effort to right, was by CBF1000A. Despite being only about 570 lbs wet, it was a heave and a half to get back onto its wheels (I thought I had put the side stand down, but had not  ) Every other bike I have lifted, I have just grabbed the handlebars and raised them, no struggle. Obviously, CoG matter quite a bit, not just the weight.

Deal fell through. The seller is now offering it to me at $3450, which is still too high, I think.

In fact, he'd have to come down well below $3K, since I've pretty much moved on mentally. It's funny how you can be pretty gung-ho about a bike, then do a little more reading/learning, and decide it's not quite right.

I think it was Perazzimix who said it, that Nevada is a $1200 bike in VA.  If you can find one.

I think much of the decision comes down to what you are looking for in a motorcycle. There are tons of options in the sub 3-4K range. There is a huge difference between the small block and big block motors and the motorcycles themselves.

The Nevada is unique in that it is still a twin throttle body V7 motor and has a unique look some love and some hate. All of the later v7s are a single throttle body. I recently acquired a 2004  Breva 750 that has a virtually identical motor. I bought the bike mainly due to its pristine condition and hopes that it was one my wife could ride. That ship sailed pretty quick when even after two and a half inch lower shocks and fork drop left her unable to comfortably flat foot both feet.

I'm keeping it as a fun local poke about bike and one that I can comfortably ride and manage as I get older. FWIW, I paid $3K for it with 12K miles and in pristine condition needing nothing.

I also have a v7ii Stornello for SB comparison. As much as I absolutely love the stornello, I have to say in comparing both, I prefer the twin throttle body feel of the Breva over the store nello for slower speeds. There's just something rich and full and how that little motor feels.

That said, there is no comparing a small block to a big block motor. When I only ride the small blocks, I find myself completely satisfied as they are wonderful balanced and rewarding motorcycles. That gets completely shot to Hades when I throw a leg over the Griso or 1200 Sport.

The great thing in all of this is there are a ton of great options to choose from in that price range. Take your time and figure out what it is you really want. Do you want to deal with tubes? Do you want something light and fun and easy to move around? Will you spend a lot of time on major roads and highway speeds or just local and country roads? Do you plan to mount luggage? At 5'8" seat height also matters. Some of the v7s can be a bit tall in the seat.

If you like the look of the Nevada, This looks like a very well sorted bike. I would offer him $3000 cash in person, and be willing to come up a bit if he doesn't bite. If you're going to keep the bike forever then the offered $3400 sounds like a deal. If you think you may flip it in a year or two, be prepared to not break even.

Agreed. I definitely noticed this but didn't know it was attributable to the twin TBs.

I'd better not ride a big block then. Ignorance is bliss!

Thanks. It IS an excellent example of the breed, I'm just not in love with the looks. However, I do find it more timeless than the baby Breva styling. I could talk myself into the Sportster/Virago vibe at the $1200 level some are throwing around (though I see zero signs that's realistic anywhere in the country as of right now), but not at $3K. Rationalizing a motorcycle purchase is always complex. If we did that consistently, we'd all be on Honda NT700Vs/Deauvilles...which I like too!

Hey! I would like to defend the Deauville  At least the 650, as I have not ridden the 700. It is a very practical motorcycle with surprisingly good handling and excellent comfort. There are two important negatives; the weather support south of your hip is poor (despite extra fairing lowers) and there is a very noticeable amount of vibrations reaching the handlebars.

I would love to have another Sportster in the garage if for nothing more than being able to listen to the exhaust notes. In my neck of the woods finding one for $5,000 or less would be neigh on impossible. Prices have even gone up after Harley canned the Evolution models.

In all seriousness, I find the NT very compelling—as an incredibly "logical" motorcycle.

Whether bikes should be logical is another question...

Get a Buell Uly and then you can have a functional, comfortable, well handling motorcycle that emits the exhaust note you are yearning for at a decent price point. Nice examples can be had in the $2,500 to $4,500 range.

I kinda feel that way about comparing my 2013 MkI 1TB Heron Head motor to my 2018 V7III 1TB Hemi Head motor.

I wonder if the difference is similar?

I always attributed it to the Heron vs Hemi head, but obviously the V7II is Heron too.

If the difference is similar, I wonder if it's not the 1TB vs 2TB but if is the 5-speed vs the 6-speed?!?

I gave one away a few years ago...

...but I would still buy the right one today.

My little bro texted a CX Roadster that's for sale locally in the $6k range. I'd be lying if I didn't say it was tempting for USD forks and dual 4-pot from brakes.

If the difference is similar, I wonder if it's not the 1TB vs 2TB but if is the 5-speed vs the 6-speed?!?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Kev,

Its really all about personal preference and how the motor feels. I feel exactly the same way when comparing the v7ii to the v7iii.
I prefer the heron head to the hemi head. I would love to compare the Breva to a v7iii.

And ultimate performance the Stornello clearly has more pep power than the Breva, Just in the same way the iii
Has over the ii. Sure, if you're interested in maximum power and performance/smoothness, go for the newer models.

I gave one away a few years ago...

...but I would still buy the right one today.

My little bro texted a CX Roadster that's for sale locally in the $6k range. I'd be lying if I didn't say it was tempting for USD forks and dual 4-pot from brakes.

The 568lb wet weight is a bit off putting.
