Anybody tried to retrofit cruise control?
« on: July 02, 2024, 04:34:38 AM »
I found this https://www.kawasakiversys.com/threads/rostra-electronic-cruise-control-250-1223-on-2015-versys-650-abs.120946/ along with this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suNzHiOMg14 showing that you can have a fairly cheap electronic cruise control fitted to any bike with fuel injection. So I am curious to hear if someone have tried and succeeded here on this forum?

Yes, it’s been done and documented here.

A quick search should turn up one rider adding the Rostra unit to his Stelvio.

I’ve considered doing similar to my GRiSO but have not gotten around to it.
Life keeps getting in the way, that and other projects.

Have you considered a mechanical throttle lock instead? Cheaper still (some near dirt free if you go the hack methods) and no fussing with adding another electronic gadget.

Yes, I installed a Rostra electronic cruise control on my Griso 11 years ago. It still works great. The controller is completely hidden under the engine and an expensive dual-button switch on the handlebar looks better than stock. A full bill of materials, a circuit diagram, photos, and instructions are still available on this site (thanks Luap!):

EDIT: Photobucket is partly obscuring the photos now. If you're interested I can repost them here.

Not even in the same realm.  Throttle lock is for those few moments you want to stretch your right hand.

Electronic cruise control allows you the freedom of not monitoring your speed constantly so you can focus on your surroundings, as well as just rest your hand on the grip instead of holding it.

Here is a photo of the only visible evidence of the cruise control on my bike. There is a dual button up against the hand grip and a push button with LED to turn on the system on the wing beside the gas tank.

I’ve installed 3 McCruise electronic cruise control kits on my bikes, F800GT, Vstrom 650 and Africa Twin. The kits aren’t cheap but McCruise puts together a motorcycle specific cruise control system that works very well and their instructions are excellent. Don’t know if they make a kit for MG.

Looks like just Norge. Might be able to modify for others.

$1000 for McCruise! My total came to $351, including $185 for the Rostra and $118 for the Pingel handlebar switch. 11 years ago, though.

Hi Moto, yeah sorry to confuse your GRiSO for a Stelvio.

Yes, your write up is very detailed and a good template for other models.

No problem! There was another posting about a Stelvio, I recall. A search might find it.

You pay for plug and play and well sorted and tested.  Lets just say the Rostra cruise control kits get passed around on forums with no one getting around to installing them.

I replaced my Concours 1400 with a Trophy SE to get the integrated cruise control.

Yes, but our roads are quite undulating, so keeping a constant-ish speed with a throttle lock will require constant modulation. Still, it is not entirely out of the question.

My first cruise control was on a BMW K1200RS that I acquired in 2012.  After that, I vowed never to be without it again.  Next came the 1400 blu guzz, then the V85 and once again a 1400, all with cruise.  I added throttle locks to most of my previous bikes and liked them for the rest they gave my right hand but still not in the same league as cruise control.  The so called throttle rockers were a help also and combined with the lock, were pretty good for long distances, but I was much younger then.
I hope you get what you are looking for Faffi.

on my ambo-vert (and all my old guzzis) I simply twist the grub screw on the throttle and marvel at my incredibly cheap cruise control!!!

Back on topic, I might get round to building an FI loop frame one of these days, if I do I'll fit a cruise control just to make it the comfiest, smoothest most laid back guzzi ever, so yes please repost the pics here

Here you are, with one added showing the two actuation levers I tried, in addition to their dimensional drawings.

brake press specification for forming steel mounting/concealing bracket below engine:
