03 EV wheel bearings
« on: July 21, 2024, 01:20:14 PM »

Just found this while changing rear tire. Anybody know if these bearings can be purchased at NAPA , will the numbers from the parts book identify for reference?

That bearing is a 6204-2RS which might be available at your NAPA.

Thank you sir, just got tire off rim then going in to start looking, so thanks.
I should probably wait to put the new tire on the rim until bearings are replaced, but it’s raining now and that new tire and bare rim are looking at me.
You’d think at age 70 I would have learned patience by now.

Any local bearing house has them. Most likely at 6 different quality rateings.

Maybe that's got something to do with your wobble.  Any decent auto parts place should have some.  I try to get non Chinese ones, preferably European or American.
Sidecar tends to wear these things out pretty quick.

The bearings I've bought at NAPA have all been SKF Explorer.

I’m thinking the bearings got the additional wear from pulling the fully loaded camper trailer.
Funny how they got that worn without me hearing or feeling it.
I’m very hopeful that new bearings will help. That and the VW steering damper.

That bearing isn't worn. The ball retainers failed and a number of balls piled up together. That's a materials or manufacturing fault, not wear. Also looks like a victim of water intrusion and lack of grease.

Well the bearings to my knowledge were original, although I am the second owner, the bike had 5000 miles on it when I got it in 2005.

My 2004 front bearings failed on a trip across the states early in life. It appeared the seal failed, it rusted, the cage disintegrated. Like yours.

Luckily they are in stock at the local NAPA auto parts places. When they looked it up, they told me it was a farm equipment part, so I got the farmer discount on them.

Later in life during a tire change, I carefully pried the seal up and put in a touch more grease to help waterproof them. There are valid reasons to NOT over grease them, but I felt better about having a bit more in there.

I had my 2002 EV rear wheel bearing at the Virginia rally in 2012.  I felt a wobble and thought I was getting a flat tire.  I stopped and moved the rear wheel side to side and three steel balls fell out.  The cage was broken apart.
