Final Drive large seal replacement-stuck
« on: September 29, 2024, 11:09:00 PM »
I'm replacing the large seal on a '98 Cali EV, and I'm having a hell of a time trying to get the new seal fully seated. Does anyone have a good way to do this without removing the final drive to put it on a bench? Pic for attention.

5 more fasteners and the final drive is on your bench and everything else becomes easy. And you can grease the spline while you are there.

Fully seated?  The seal should not be pushed in fully against the large bearing race. It will rub, get hot, and deposit seal rubber in lube.

Use a 7mm thick seal.  Make sure large bearing is fully seated in cover.
Put 1 mm shim stock on bearing race inside the cover. Place the seal in cover until it lightly touched shims.  Remove shims.  Check to if bearing race turns freely and not touching seal.

My seal continues to leak after replacing 3 times.  The bike came from Florida and had sand everywhere when I restored.  The sealing surface on the crown gear shaft is worn/grooved. The leak is minor, but leaks.  Going to find a shaft sleeve and over size seal to fix soon.

That would probably make the reassembly process a little smoother as well since I'm doing it without a lift in my car park. Was tricky to get the wheel out in the first place!

I do it on the bike. You can use an oil filter cup to fully insert seal. Find one w/same size OD & tap on outer edge. Easy

I use a cast one by BMW for K's, only use for over 20yrs, and it's plenty beat up. It seemed to work OK for the direct tapping room allowed.
