Retirement—-TWICE!

I’m 67 going on 68.  I retired a few years ago with no plan and sat on my butt…doing nothing.   So… this past February I took a full time job and went back to work as I was bored.

Now 4 months later I’m thinking of going back into retirement ….but this time with a plan.  My plan or a part of it is to pack my tent and camping supplies and travel on my guzzi.  That along with some exercise program , and my normal yard work (7 acres) and Il be fine.  Now to plan an initiation of retirement for the second time date!

I’m 62. Probably gonna hang it up at 65. Been working only 75% hours. Gives me more time to play with all the stuff in my garage and develop non-work interests. Hopefully it will make the transition easier.

Yep, I screwed up and didn’t have a plan.  Wont make that mistake twice!

This is my plan in a year or two. I also want to buy some sort of property in N GA, Western NC, Eastern TN, to both do some good riding regularly and escape the worst part of Florida summers. Mainly interested in existing condos or developments with garages, lake or close to a lake, not wanting to have another full sized house and/or chunka land to take care of. I get stuff in the mail all the time about land for sale up around there, usually lots only. I don't want to go thru a build from far away. Any of you southern appalachian Guzzi guys have a favorite RE agent or know of something for sale in the next two years, PM me.
I will be running up thataway from 22-28 June up to Camp Dan'l Boone in NC, probably take a more easterly route, may try for TOTD on the return ride.

Sounds like a good plan!  I’m out in the country outside of Cleveland Tn, not far from Tellico Plains, Tn and good riding.  Good luck with your move.  I have a real estate agent but she’s based out of here (Cleveland Tn) so don’t know if that would work for you.  Bob

Just watch out for HOA's with rules against motorcycles.

The area I am looking at is where TN, GA NC and SC all meet up so roughly Cleveland  (TN) to Pigeon Forge to Waynseville, NC, Clemson, SC, back west to a line thru Cleveland GA, and Chatsworth. Big area, I know, would go as far south as Gainesville, not much further north than PF.  2nd home type of thing for now, maybe make it permanent after awhile. If she does the area east of you or has a colleague that'd be fine.

Have a friend that lives in S. Pittsburg, was gonna go up to them and another in Lexington in November-ish. Last June we went to Camp Rainey Mtn in Clayton,  I did the Cherohala Skyway, very nice. If there's no bad hurricanes this year, should be there for TWOS in September & also head over to Barber Vintage days in October. Only got in one long trip last year!

In my exit interview I got a "I don't suppose I could talk you into staying could I." I had been unhappy in the job for the last year, low pay, staff reduction etc. The answer was easy. I went to work in the aircraft shop working on radials where I was appreciated.

When my grandfather retired, he moved onto 16 acres.  I was happy because it would keep him busy.  Several years later he said he worked harder after he retired than he did the last 20 years on a job.  Some of the people that I worked with that retired died in a year and I believe its was because they had nothing to do.  Staying active is the key to retirement IMO.

I too am working on my 2nd retirement. I retired from Active Military Service 15 years ago. Went to college and finished my degree.

Now I work for the Air Force in the same squadron I retired from. Gonna hang it up at 63, at least that’s the plan. Got about 4 years and change until then.

After that, I have plenty to keep busy with for at least the next dozen years. I figure I’ll ride bicycles or run every morning and spend the rest of the day wrenching on projects or doing work around the house.

I’ve worked with too many people who passed on within a year or 2 of retirement….and a few who barely made it 6 months.

Reverse scenario out here in the middle of the Pacific.  Retired from a local airline before they died.  Side projects kept me busy.  Catering to the private jets through an FBO and a delivery service of pineapples/papayas for outbound tourists.  Meanwhile maintaining the rental properties in Kona and Honolulu.  I also have the herd to look after.  31+. 

I crunched numbers and figured the faster way to finance my youngest going to college was to go back to work rather than selling something.

Different career and not because of "something to do" but rather a different career path.  No manager micro-managing what I'm doing.  I'm independent in my duties.  Paid vacation leave.  13+ paid holidays.  Paid sick leave which I use liberally.  I often get asked  "When are you retiring?"  My answer, "After I beat my mom's record."  Next answer is she retired at 86, the oldest employee in the Federal system.

Some of the plan should be Medicare, which you should have.  SSA benefits.  Crunch the numbers.  If you tapped your SSA benefits at 66, you can pay back the funds then re-retire at age 70 and get 1/3 more in SSA benefits.  If you're okay with the current SSA payments and whatever pension then.  👍

One way to figure and figure out your retirement age is look at your parent's ages when they passed.  Add both.  Divide by 2.  You'll have an approx. age for longevity.  If you're healthier than both parents.  Add a little more years to your longevity.  My longevity is north of 90.  🤣 

I am currently employed, have Medicare, a pension, rental income & SSA benefits.  The wife has her SSA benefits, pension and Medicare.  She doesn't work and doesn't need to.  Both sons are adults working and independent.  NOT asking for money.

Good question to ask on when/how to re-retire.  👍

If someone is pondering Medicare, SSA at age 62 or the advantage of waiting.  I can give input to help you.  That's part of what I do.
