Top Box Mounts broke on Norge
« on: May 12, 2025, 02:32:09 AM »
As the title says, went out to check tyre pressure today and found the top box loose.
Imagine the horror when I saw that the two tabs that slot into the mount were gone.

Thankfully they were both held in place by the box and I retrieved them.
Now wondering if the box is ABS and I should use my ABS glue (that melts the plastic) or a strong two part epoxy.

Or even if that would work - would the bond be strong enough to prevent this from happening again...
Nothing too heavy in the box, just a 3M rainsuit shell for our monsoons and a pair of waterproof boots.

There was a issue on the early Norges, boxes came off onto the street.

That happened to mine ages ago and I did a modification involving steel lugs.
I’ll try to find the shots, I did post it at the time.

Happened with my Norge OEM top box as well. I was riding over some ruts and all of a sudden, the top box hit me in the back and landed on the ground. The way MG designed the thing was absolutely moronic. I modified the mount, so a big bolt went through the bottom of the of the top case then through a piece of flat steel bar that I welded to the OEM mount. No way it would ever come off by accident again but was still easy to remove by just removing the bolt.

I think you should send me one of your broken mounts, glued together, and I carve you new ones out of aluminum.

That would be super helpful.
Otherwise I think I'll have to go the bolt-thru route

I will be home later today, I’ll send pictures and descriptions.
Don’t just bolt it on, that’s crude. Mine has lasted 10 years and can never break.

This is the treatment I applied to my top box when it did the same thing.

The two metal plates are tied to the box as you see.
The metal “ tongues” protrude through and slide into the receptacles in the mount.
Also you’ll see that I fitted a pin to the mount.

This poked up through the box when it’s attached and a small clevis pin goes through

It cannot and never will come off.
Indeed, there have been times where I unlocked the box and attempted to remove it having forgotten that the pin was still in place and was perplexed as to why it would not detach… :embarrassed:

Woah. Thats quite a build. Was expecting some tiny tabs protruding out like cleats on a football shoe or something and not the reinforcing ribs from a WW2 battleship.

It needs to be that way, because of the cantilever forces involved.
If you do not transfer the forces from their point of origin through to the point of attachment, all the strengthening in the world won’t help. It’ll be as strong as an Ox, but will still break at the weakest point and the whole shooting match will go arse up and tumble off down the road…!
The weight is being carried by the “trusses” and the top box is carried along for the ride, with no loads imparted on it.. :thumb:

...and once that breaks, ditch the OEM top box and install a Shad, with a much better mounting plate, much more solid "snap in"...with both a hardened plastic and/or aluminum mounting plate that can be bolted to the same rear protruding metal bars that are used by the OEM mount minus the decorative cover, and just a few holes to be drilled accompanied by some longer Grade 8 or Blackened bolts for strength.  The box itself is superior, there are several versions...mine is expandable to hold up to 2 helmets, or collapsible for a more low profile view.  Mounted as such, this box will never let go under a Category 5 hurricane, much less the forces exerted while driving down the road.

Much better quality, and much more solid mount....exhibit A here for purposes of a visual.

I would Paul, but I cannot envisage my bike without THAT case.
It’s been so many places and seen so much.
Anyway.
I’ll be dead before it fails so no issue and if it does before that ?
I’ll fix it again.
