Cassville Ferry across the Mississippi
« on: July 10, 2025, 01:38:00 PM »
A good tip for anyone coming across the Mississippi River to get to the Wisconsin rally is to use the Cafield Cassville ferry north of Dubuque. It is $10 per bike, cash only, and a beautiful ride. Details for accessing the ferry from the west bank are here:

https://www.explorecassville.com/ferry-daily-operations

Though the website calls the access road a gravel road, I would call it well packed dirt with minimal gravel on top, perfectly suitable for motorcycles.

We had a band of intrepid scouts check it out yesterday, who found it all in good shape:

Yes, that is a much more civilized crossing than say.... the Lansing bridge!  For those that haven't had the pleasure, Lansing is an open metal grate bridge with pretty steep entrance and exit angles.  I found it uncomfortable and my wife absolutely loathed it.

I've used them a number of time.  Planning on using it on the way north to said WI rally.  Probably stop overnight in Elkader, IA. $10 per tent.  Couldn't do the rally but been ether a number of times too.   :thumb:  First time I used the Captain's daughter was working as a deck hand for the summer.     Very distracting tight white short shorts.  Prettiest sailor, I've seen.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉 Hawaii.

Last night at the Iowa rally I was told that the Lansing bridge is being replaced with a new one and will be torn down when the new construction is finished. I think I followed the two of you across on my Cal 2 at a rally years ago.

I just might remember that!
I hope it went well- the Iowa rally was always very special to us.  As Arnie said- 'I'll be bock'.  We'll have to go for a ride again!
Cheers

So everyone.... where are the pictures?

Pics from 2018 riding the ferry.  Hoping to get a hop across again, depending on time either before or after the rally.

No pictures other than lining up for the parade. Not sure if these will load correctly or not. Apology in advance.

This summer should be the last chance to go across on the infamous steel-grated Lansing bridge, formally the Blackhawk Bridge, built in 1931. It has just been announced it will be demolished this fall, earlier than originally promised, due to structural problems.

It is true that its position over a very tight curve in the Mississippi makes it more subject to barge strikes, and that shifts in its supporting piers have caused it to be closed a couple of times in the last year. But if you time things so that there are no big trucks and no barges in sight, you should be good.
