Rubber on Exhaust
« on: July 16, 2025, 06:08:46 AM »
Hello,

I have a Stelvio E5. The exhaust on the right hand side has a somewhat flimsy heat shield which probably could be longer. I must have had my boot resting on it when I moved my feet back once or twice and some rubber melted off the sole and transferred onto the exhaust. Now it is burnt in and dark black charcoal. I tried turpentine with not much luck.

Is there anything that would easily take the rubber off without scratching the exhaust?

I use wet Brillo pads on chrome. Won’t scratch it or stainless though if the stainless is oxidized it may
Brighten it and you might have clean the whole exhaust to match.

Get it good & hot then rub hard with a 100% cotton cloth.
Also works when plastic bag blows onto headers en route.

Starter spray and a rough cloth rub has worked for me in the past. This also works for many spot cleaning chores; of course do not spray on hot exhaust!!!!!

I tried everything to get a melted plastic bag stain off. Eventually the extreme heat of the pipe just vaporized it away.

I’ve found that after some heat cold cycles it gets brittle when cold and a sharp non metallic scraper gets it off with minimal cosmetic damage to the pipe. I prefer a hard wood scraper

Oven cleaner does work.  Learn from my mistake - spray it on a cloth and then rub onto the pipe.  Don't spray! - you'll overspray and take paint off cases, etc.  Ax me how I know!
