What would you do?
« on: July 29, 2025, 03:37:12 PM »
The motorcycle is a 2020 V85TT.

Problem I need to remove two motor mount bolts on the front of the motor to mount a plate for a leaner sidecar mount. I am in the phase of designing mounts for a leaner sidecar and I want to use the front two lower motor mount bolts as a mounting point. I need to remove at least one of the bolts so that I can get a measured length and then add a little bit to make up the thickness of the sidecar mounting plate. The bots are not OEM blots as the bike has crash bars that are mounted at that location, so they are already longer than the OEM bolts.

The engine is cold and I went to remove the left bolt when sitting on the bike and as I turned it it felt weird as in I don’t know maybe like there is something wrong with the threads. The other bolt would not move with a 3/8” drive ratchet. I have done things over the years that say when something doesn’t feel right leave it and think about it before continuing. I don’t know a penetrating oil would make it back to the threads at the engine block.

So the question is “What would you do?”

 Looks like 8.8 bolts
A quick jolt with an impact driver, this is not an old bike so not seized. locktite was probably applied.

Put a trans jack under motor, when you lift it on jack it should un-cock the motor in frame and you can continue tacking out bolts.

The parts book say M10x55 but dent give a thread pitch and that length is to short for my needs.

Now THIS makes sense. Weight of the engine is binding the bolts.

8.8 refers to the strength of the bolt, not size

Ah my mistake. It is unclear what the bolt grade is since they are aftermarket and hold the crash bars in place.

In my experience, when metric bolts are specified without giving a pitch, the standard pitch is implied.  In this case, you can probably safely assume M10x1.5   Also, when there is no obvious need for a finer pitch, such as fine adjustment resolution the standard would normally be used.  Std pitch screws are more abundant and less costly.

I finally got the bolts loose. It appears who ever installed the crash bars used some type of thread locker. I think jacking and supporting the motor helped. But I must say I was a little nervous trying to get them out they just didn't feel right. Luckily no aluminum came out with the bolts.

Also Aklawok the bolts were stamped with 8.8 which would be similar to a grade 5 bolt. Thanks for pointing that out.
