Recommended motorcycle insurance vendors

Hi Gang,

I recently got a notification that Allstate is getting out of the motorcycle insurance business.  They have been great, and I plan to keep them for the autos.

Who are you buying insurance from and are you happy with them?

Insurance seems to be based on a million different factors and what works and is affordable for one does not for another. I'm sure you'll get a 1000 responses on who everyone uses, how good a rate they get and how the coverage is awesome but the reality is everyone's insurer is irrelevant to you. You need to call around or go online and start getting quotes and comparing prices.

I will say my insurer has good coverage and good rates but I also have automobiles, home owners and life insurance with them. Another big factor in the cost of motorcycle insurance in Pennsylvania is medical is not part of the policy that fall onto my health insurance.

I have had both Progressive and GEICO in the past. Adding a third bike last year, I sought a cheaper premium and switched over to Foremost. You have to chat with an agent to start a policy, and I guess they partner with different companies for their various policy types. I’ll most likely renew with them.

I have progressive for my modern bikes. Rates are OK and total cost actually went down when I added my KLR. Never had to make a claim so can’t comment about that. If your bikes are over 25 years old and you ride them less than 2,500 miles a year you can get classic car/bike insurance for peanuts. I use Condon Skelly for my two antiques.

I switched my motorcycle from State Farm to Progressive this year.  Progressive was half the price for the same coverage.  I ended up adding more coverage and was still at 60% of what State Farm was charging me for their coverage.

I'll very likely switch my car over to Progressive when it's time to renew.  State Farm has just gotten too high in my area.  I'm sure it's to discourage customers after several natural disasters in the area over the past couple years.

Everything I have is through USAA except the motorcycles which are with Progressive by way of USAA (I assume they have some kind of partnership). I've never made any claims but have no complaints. Been almost 20 years.

National General is owned by Allstate, so given that I’ve been with them since 1988 though various company ownerships, I hope they’re remaining in the motorcycle insurance business.  I pay under $400 annually for liability only on nine motorcycles, have never made a claim.

Been a while since my eye sight took me off two wheelers but I REALLY LIKED MARKEL. Had them several years with one claim. Low cost and the claim service was first rate!!

I also have Progressive. I went with them when I bought a used bike from a Harley dealer. It is what the dealership offered. The bike was 10 years old but low mileage and beautiful condition so I paid kind of what I thought was kind of a high price. I lost it 6 months later when my shop burned down. I thought I would get hosed but they paid me almost exactly what I paid for it plus tax and registration. I have stayed with them ever since and haven't shopped around.

I have Progressive on my motorcycles, separate from house and auto which are elsewhere. Progressive had a better rate and I've actually worked through claims with them before including a motorcycle that the wrote off, and it went as well as I think you could expect of working with insurance so if something were to happen again I have that confidence.

I have Progressive on some bikes and a car and Hagerty on the older bikes and the el Camino. I’ve made minor claims with both insurance companies with no issues and no increase in premiums related to the claims. Progressive even got replacement parts estimates from Harper’s on the Norge.

Hagarty on the vintage bikes, and I know they are good. Progressive on the newer bike, reasonable price but I have no idea what happens in the event of a claim. I tend to prefer to self insure as much as possible, with an umbrella policy to cover things if they get out of hand.

Progressive on my one modern bike.  I had USAA for cars and homeowners for over 30 years, then switched everything to Progressive.  Saved $$$$ by switching to progressive.  When I called USAA to cancel, they didn’t even try to keep me.  Screw ‘em.  I encourage anyone with USAA to shop around.

I don't have any recommendations, I have a low opinion of all of them whether for MC, cars or homeowners.  I've had Motorists (Encova now) for decades, Foremost for a decade, Progressive now for my bikes.  My recent auto & homeowners rates are causing rectal bleeding.  Good luck!

I had Progressive and it treated me well until they cancelled my MC policy because they said they had a policy of non-renewal if there were 2 claims in a 2 year period even if you were not at fault (my case).

Years ago I had Dairyland which had to be the worst insurance company though I understand they are now under new management.  They dropped me after a truck operated by student learning how to drive trucks backed into my parked LeMans, they said I was a risky client. I kept saying to the representative that the bike was parked but the guy was completely rude and I just gave up.

At some shows, Progressive used to have full sized carboard cut outs of Flo, so you could have your picture taken with her.

At the last bike show I went to a few years back, the Progressive booth had a Harley that you could sit on and have your picture taken.  When they gave you the digital photo, Flo was riding on the passenger's seat!!

Don't give up.  She might call you back someday....

The only thing I can add to this discussion is to take the highest deductible you can afford, and to consider dropping collision if the bikes are paid off and you can afford the loss. By that I mean if the bike was stolen or totaled tomorrow and you had no coverage, would the loss affect your lifestyle?  If the answer is "no" or "not really" (I mean, being pissed off about it is permissible ) then you can save some money by not carrying full coverage.  Insure against catastrophic loss (and catastrophic lawsuits!), not a toy.

I know! I had a friend that was an ambulance driver.  He always said you could tell if, after a motorcycle accident, the rider wasn't hurt too bad if all he kept saying was, "How's my motorcycle??!"
