Great little tool kit
« on: August 26, 2025, 02:45:53 PM »
In an never ending quest to get a nice compact tool kit that is comprehensive I have come as close as ever. On Sunday I was perusing the Harbor Freight circular and saw that they had an Icon 1/4" drive socket and bit set for $79.99 but over the weekend all socket sets were 40% off so for $47.99 I decided to give it a whirl. This will be on my R1250 GSA and the heaviest lifting it'll be asked to do is wheel removal. The torx bits only go up to T40 so I robbed a T45 and T50 torx socket and 1/4" x 3/8" adapter I had in the "extras" tool bin and rounded out all the torx I'd ever need for this or any BMW. The rear lugs are torqued to 44 ft/lbs so I decided to do a bit of bench testing to see if the 1/4" drive ratchet with 6" extension and 1/4" x 3/8" adapter would hold up. It passed with fliting colors. Next I broke out all that was needed to remove the front wheel and again no problem. Since these are the two biggest tasks I figured removal of T27 body fasteners would just come natural so I did no further testing.

I did also buy a 8mm thru 19mm combo wrench set as it was cheaper than buying individual wrenches at Lowes/Home depot. I only carry 10 12, & 13mm so in addition to my Icon 52pc set i have two torx sockets and 3 small wrenches to be able to tackle anything roadside repair I can effect. Honestly this combo of tools would work on a fair majority of what would need working on the bike in the garage.

Quality is nice, the case is great with a little flex space to hold a couple small add on's like the 1/4 x 3/8 adapter but not overly big @ 6-1/2" x 4" x 2" so it packs away nicely. My only regret is not buying a couple more of these while they were on sale for the other bikes. I'll be keeping an eye out if they run this deal again I'm stocking up.

Kit contains:

1/4 in. drive locking flex-head ratchet, 1/4 in. spinner handle, 1/4 in. drive extensions (2 in. and 4 in.), 1/4 in. drive universal joint, 1/4 in. drive bit holder socket, 1/4 in. bit extension Shallow sockets: 5 mm, 5.5 mm, 6 mm, 7 mm, 8 mm, 9 mm, 10 mm, 11 mm, 12 mm, 13 mm, 14 mm, 3/16 in., 7/32 in., 1/4 in., 9/32 in., 5/16 in., 11/32 in., 3/8 in., 7/16 in., 1/2 in., 9/16 in.;TORX bits: T10H, T15H, T20H, T25H, T27H, T30H, T40H; Slotted bits: 4.5 mm, 6.5 mm, 8 mm; Hex bits: 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 7 mm, 5/32 in., 3/16 in., 1/4 in.; Phillips bits: PH1, PH2, PH3, POZIDRIV bits: PZ1, PZ2, PZ3

HF tools have become quite good. I follow a guy on UTube, Project Farm, who does a lot of tool testing. Harbor Freight tools usually finish in the very top tier, beating out SnapOn and other quality brands by substantial margins. I generally don't like to purchase Chinese products but I will if the quality is there. The HF quality is good, the prices have increased also. You get what you pay for.

This is one of those rare instances where I feel I've gotten more than I paid for with this set.

I should have that HF still sells cheap not so great stuff, however they are now carrying some pretty nice stuff. Different lines of quality.

Liked it so much this weekend HF has 20% one item for ITC members so I bought another'en for the Hexhead. Also stopped by the local hardware store and bought a 14mm rod coupling to make an front axle tool. Drilled the rod cplg with 5/16th bit so the 1/4" extension slides through and voila  axle wrench.

I'm impressed with the IKON line at HF. Seems decent quality.  I'm setting up a new/second garage in the next year, and plan to do a full IKON tool set and Cabinet so I don't have to keep carting tools back and forth between garages. The 'standard' HF stuff is throwaway,  but seems to hold up well, especially for the $$
