shifter drum mod
« on: October 21, 2025, 10:53:24 PM »
Anyone milled out the holes on an early selector drum to slots as like in G3 onwards and did it make a difference to shifting .  As the factory changed from holes to slots I assume there was a good reason, like not so fussy when shimming selector drum ??  thanks Ray

After 2001 or so the shifter drum changed:

T3:
14234405   DRUM

2002 California Stone 1100:
03234400   SHIFT DRUM

In 2003 I had Jason at Motorcycle International change my T3 over to the new drum while he was in there. He said it could make some operational improvement, so the difference as far as he was concerned did not seem to be an improvement in ease of shimming. In fact the shafts were not re-shimmed since they stayed in place.

But my T3 has always shifted well, and the gearbox was pronounced to be in good condition, so it made no improvement to shifting that I could tell.

There was no official G3 model. Maybe you mean some other one.

I'm pretty sure he meant to write "T3".

Early five-speeds such as those used in the Eldorado, V7 Sport and 850-T have a hole for the detent vs. a milled slot for later ones. I've installed the later drum into early transmissions and experienced no difference in shifting. I actually prefer the drum with the hole, because it helps me set shift drum shimming correctly. Line up the drum hole with the detent plunger bore and you're super close.

Thanks all and yes I meant T3 , thanks Charlie, im about to open up a trans for issues and wondered if the mod would be worth the effort and I didnt want to use a tonti drum and  change the shift pattern  so will stick with what I have , has allways changed well except going into first gear when down  changing on the move , stop the bike go into neutral and then select 1st and no problems but to do it without stopping you have to keep pressure on 1st gear for a revolution of the wheel to fully engage . I can place the detent or the blunt end of a drill bit into the detent hole when in all gears and it travels all the way into the drum so im happy with shim adjustment. will replace pawls and springs and the drum pins for the hell of it while im in there
