« on: October 23, 2025, 09:51:02 AM »

What is your favorite gasket material to put between an intake manifold and the flat mating surface on the cylinder head?

Recommended thickness?

thanks in advance!

If no gasket available -  PERMATEX RED made for things removable like exhaust pipes, etc. semi permanant.

The problem with Hylomar is it almost permanent. You will need  heat and solvents to break the bond. Great for engine cases though.

I have had good luck using hanging file folders for gasket material. Its tough, and is coated with something that makes it very durable.  Ive had better luck with that than the paper gasket material they sell at the parts store

When I worked in the aircraft shop one of my duties was engine tear downs. When one came in with that permanent sealer I just a miserable time getting things apart. Then the cleaning was an absolute nightmare. My boss called it Yamabond. The customer paid more for his overhaul due to the increased hours. We used Permatex Ultra Copper on cases without gaskets and smeared a very light coat on gaskets. We overhauled radials, actually restored them. We even put thread on case surfaces as the manuals specified. Our engines were redone just as they left the factory right down to brass safety wire.

I make a gasket for my still out of that stuff wrapped in teflon tape.

Flashbacks to my Eldo and little money/parts availability - valve cover gaskets cut from rubberized cork.

Those were the days ...
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.
