I ride motorcycles rather than fly because I don’t have absolute confidence in machines to keep running while I am the pilot.

I still want a jet pack like they used on Lost In Space when I was kid.

I used to be a Popular Mechanics addict, and remember in the 70's seeing Jetpacks, personal Airplanes, and all kinds of cool 'future tech'

It was what motivated me at 10-11 to create an electric go cart with an on board generator. The Cart was powered by two car batteries and a 12V motor out of some appliance, and had a Briggs & Stratton Lawn Mower engine that powered an alternator/regulator.  My dad who was an Electrical Engineer for Hazeltine (Grumman Contractor) and I with help from my grandfather who was a mechanical genius actually drew up the 'plans' on grid paper (remember that?) and sent them to GM.  I remember when GM released the Volt, and realized it was the same principle we had designed.

The kid in me would still love a personal jet pack or flying Jet wing, but being just one year into retirement, I'm not ready to die just yet......

GuzziSteve, that reminds me of the movie with Jackie Stewart (?) where they crash a plane in the desert and then construct a flying wing out of the wreckage and fly out all strapped to the flying wing.

My dad worked for the Navy's Bureau of Ships where he was a sonar expert in charge of the Measurements and Testing Branch at the Underwater Sound Laboratory in New London Ct where he had a lot of say on awarding contracts for sonar systems. I remember him mentioning Hazeltine numerous times.

This wing was at Oshkosh in 17 and been around for some time. I saw it like being as close as you can to flying like a bird. Think I'd like a chute though.
Laying on top instead of hanging underneath is the thing, he has many flights on his website.

Flight of the Phoenix.  Starring Jimmy Stewart.  A remake was made later.  The a/c crashed killing the stunt pilot.

Follow-up. Paul Mantz died when fuselage broke behind the wing.  Filmed in the CA desert.  1965.  Remake with Dennis Quaid.  Worth watching too.
