8 flute oil filter wrench on Amazon?
« on: March 21, 2026, 05:25:33 PM »
First oil change on my Breva 1100, bought filter, 14 flute wrench, gaskets from MG Cycle. The new Ufi filter is 8 flutes, which of course I didn’t catch until after I’d drained the oil and removed the old filter.

It would be convenient if there were an eight flute wrench available on Amazon, as MG Cycle and the like take about a week to get here. And it’s beautiful weather.

If not, then c’est la vie.

I decided the path of least resistance was to purchase a Hiflofiltro HF551 from Amazon, arrives tomorrow with free shipping for $9. Problem solved.

Ive noticed some of the stamped sheet metal oil filter sockets can slip, if one over torques the filter.   Sometimes sandpaper will help to get traction.

I also saw a note in the MG Cycles site that some of the Ufi filters have a design that MG doesn’t have a wrench for. I think I’ll be avoiding Ufi filters for a while.

Ever consider a "strap wrench"? They handle all filter configurations.

I have an 8 flute and on the 12 I tap it on and use 2 screws in holes and they all come off. Mine works on a Bosch so that's what I use. Since they had the sealing rubber issue. I can get them anywhere.

I've had that issue, and will put a shop cloth between the filter and wrench/cup, and tap it on with a hammer. Usually works without issue. I also drill 2 holes in the wrench/cup so if it is really stuck I can screw 2 sheet metal screws through the cup and into the filter/ A bit messy, but that always solves the problem.

I use one with a metal strap: it can sometimes be awkward on semi-recessed filters but mostly there's just enough purchase to do the job.
All the spin-on filters that I've come across, you install with a firm hand tightening, so at worst to remove, just puncture the filter with a large screwdriver and spin it off. Gets kinda messy though.  :undecided:
IIRC, the Monster 600 had a semi-recessed filter but the 955 Sprint ST one was fully recessed and I had to buy the relatively expensive large hex tool to remove/install.

Doesn’t really work on a recessed filter such as the Breva’s.

Most any good auto parts store should have a complete selection of oil filter wrenches.
