Assisted needed
« on: April 05, 2026, 11:27:43 PM »
I am purchasing a V50 from a board member who resides in Portland Maine.
Would we have a member who lives near the area of Portland who may be coming to NC for any reason in the next few months, who would be willing to transport the bike to central NC, the Piedmont Triad area. Maybe visit the beautiful Great Smokey Mountains and any of the dozens of the Appalachians Wonders and scenic landscapes.
I will fund the trip and offer my river house for a free place to stay, which is on the north fork of the new river, while a taker tours the Smokey’s.
If this adventure is of interest to anyone please just PM me so we can discuss a possible adventure for someone.

Thanks
Dan

I'm not going Maine to NC anytime soon, but if it comes down to putting together a relay I can handle a day trip through the central portion (~NY-DE or MD or the like).

I can house the bike in south central Pennsylvania (right off of I-81 PA exit 20) for a couple day if needed for the second leg of the relay teams to pick up.

If only I still had my car, I’d trailer it down, stopping at all the WG members along the way so they could add some goofy farkle to the bike

Thanks for the offers guys, we’ll see how it plays out.
Lucian has given me a really good, buddy pal price, to the point that the cost of getting it to the central part of NC, Winston Salem or in the Smokey’s at the river place, exceeds the price I’m getting the V50 for.
Dirk offered to rent a U-Haul in may when he comes south to visit family and bring the V however he checked today and it would cost around $1200 just for the rent and that’s not including gas.
Wife got a price from a bike transporter for around 1200 bucks!
I haven’t checked Haul Bikes because I had a major conflict with them with my last time I hired them to transport a Calvin from up north.
I guess Dirk is going to need to go purchase a new truck to get the V50 down here. 😉😂
My hopes were that one of the members would want to take a trip to the great Smoky Mountains and could pick the bike up and come to the Smokies. I would put them up in the River house for as long as they needed to spend as much time as they wanted in the great Smoky Mountains.

Yes Dan, I vote for a fly and ride. It sounds like a great trip on a V50.

$1200 to ship sounds insanely expensive.  But i have not shipped anything in years.  I would try uship.com.

I'm seeing diesel at $6/Gallon. I assume shipping will immediately reflect that increase.

I’m just not that adventurous any longer, Allen.
If you haven’t ran off to another country you could do it for me🤔

That's what I'm talking about the joy of sharing your motorcycle.

If Dan & Luap fined each of us 10 cents, every time we broke a Wild Guzzi rule, the Wild Guzzi motorcycle transport fund would have tens of thousands of dollars!!

I just got off the phone with Haul Bikes, yikes!!!
1,130 + 50 bucks to waive the 500 dollar deductible if they damage your bike.
Don’t look like it’s going to be feasible to ship the little goose in any method of shipping service.
Looks like a plan B is needed.

Throw it in the back of a Dodge Ram diesel and you are looking at about $800 just for fuel (round trip). So $1,100 doesn't seem unreasonable for a bonded carrier.

If the machine is running right its an easy 4 day adventure after the big bird drops you in Portland. Might still cost a grand but you get the experience. Spring is in the air up here so it's quite doable.

Ron’s response just reminded me that I haven’t made a bike carrier for the sidecar frame, yet. Could’ve hauled the bike down on the rig. Riding through the Green Mts. with that setup sure would be an experience.

If someone is willing to bring it closer to Boston, I can trailer it to around New York City at no charge.
My trailer is not covered, so need to consider the weather.
Winter is not giving up yet around here. It snowed this morning.

Cover the fuel and my Amtrak ticket back to Portland, and I could ride the bike down to Pescatore in Boston.

Thanks for all the responses and offers to assist guys.
I think at this point I’m going to just try to work something out with my buddy Lucian(Dave).
He’s been talking about a trip to the Smokey’s for 3 years now so maybe we can work something out that would be a plus for both of us.
It will have to be a situation like that or I may just need to pass on the little goose.
It no biggie either way. I was just thinking that at 73 a lighter bike would be in my future if I continue riding. I’m no longer a distance rider, the river place, 100 miles and maybe an occasional trip to the shore, 200 miles, is my limits now.
Anyhow no biggie either way and life is good.
Thanks again to those who offered to assist with this adventure 👍

Can recommend a 750 Breva if only used to big blocks. Super maneuverability in and out of the garage.  Not got my V7C roadworthy so can't compare yet (if at all) but my wee V50 is certainly fine up to 120 miles round trip, if I manage expectations (overtaking and braking).
Nearly natural progression..

Back in 82 i bought a new left over Honda GL500interstate dresser. I rode that bike 25k doing 250-300 mile days and never had any issues due to the small CC displacement.
I suspect the V500 would be just as competent as the Honda?

Considerably less bulky and heavy, though reliability depends on a lot of factors.

Dan-O, If you get a chance, beg, borrow or steal a ride on someone's Suzuki DR650 and let us know what you think.  Just a jet kit, and a seat concepts seat and you will be ready for almost anything.

It is a bike that a lot of older riders gravitate to for a variety of reasons, light weight, simplicity, ergonomics. longer travel suspension, versatility, etc.

Every time i jump on mine, my first ride on a four stroke motorcycle, a 1970? Honda SL100 at about age 14 comes to mind.  Weird, huh?

It is also one of the few bikes strangers will offer to let you ride.  Why not?  If you drop it, chances of damage are slim, so. little risk.

You can always stick some Moto Guzzi bling on it and claim it is a very rate model....
