Eldorado air filter mod / alternative
« on: April 18, 2026, 10:44:51 PM »
Hey.

I'm currently getting a 72 Eldo back on the road and one thing that was kind of elusive was an air filter to fit the original airbox. I'm in Australia and getting this sort of stuff is a bit difficult. Yes - I could have just ditched the airbox and run pods but I was keen to keep a functioning airbox if possible.

Anyway, I have a friend who is a dirt bike nut and has a mountain of spares - I was thinking maybe a dirt bike foam filter might work.... so he found me a filter from him KTM stash...

This one fits Husky, KTM and Gas gas - but you could probably use other foam filters as most dirt bikes run a similar setup.

A couple of slits to let the cover plate stand-offs through

And it fits in there pretty well.

There's about 5-10mm to squash down once the cover plate is bolted back in.

Anyhow - thought I'd share as this might help someone else.

I use foam all the time to make custom airfilters. my XT600 runs great with similar foam replacing the corrugated paper in the stock filter.

My SP1000 runs great on UNI filters

My NSU max runs a modified foam filter.

My DR350 has it stock :)

To give credit, learned the trick from the late mtiberio, a luminary of this forum.

on mike's eldovert which I now own, he put a giant spring covered by a tube of foam between the 2 carburettors, absolutely genius!   :thumb:

oh, wow, what an honor!

it's a long UNI "sock" filter and ASFAIK, he just added another entry. They come with the spring form the factory.

I actually use two smaller separate UP-4200 UNIs

Any idea where the rest of his bikes ended up? Still with the family?

I'm not sure where the T3 based LSR bike went, but I bought his last bike which was a CSC 250 San Gabriel. Also his trailer and all of his Guzzi parts.

I used to see K&N or UNI's made for the box, trouble is the rubber doesn't seal the best. My 700 doesn't have and airbox on it cause some owner cut off the tabs. I run the big oval K&N's and they will fit inside of airbox case w/o oval to meet rubber. My sidecovers don't hide the box so it looks like a big air gap. I have more battery plates just haven't swapped them out. I also have plenty of airboxes owning 3 V700's. Don't let the dirt in.

Doesn't look oiled to me? Personally I would oil any foam air filter.
