Breva 1100, cranks but no start
« on: May 21, 2026, 09:14:24 PM »
Last Monday, the bike didn't start after leaving work. Hitting the start button 3-4 times resulted in the engine cranking but not catching. The dash voltage read 12.2 ( later, at home it read about 13.5 on a meter ) , the oil light next to the Neutral light was on, Triangle with ! inside and "SERVICE" showed where the mileage numbers appear. Something cut electric power, because the odometer reset to 0.0 , and the other items like average mileage and speed were blank. When the key is turned "On", the fuel pump will prime.
The Startus Interruptus modification was done years ago.
A search on my phone indicated that  one possibility might be the phase sensor ( Crankshaft position sensor).
This evening, brought the bike out, expecting to chack the sensor. Just for ha-ha's, turned the key on, and the dash indications were all normal. Hit the Start button, and it fired right up as it nothing ever happened. The idle almost sounded like it was loping a little , but that might have been my imagination. Shut it off after a minute, geared up and went for a short ride- all normal. After a few minutes being off, turned the key on, and the Service notice was back, along with the other warnings. But then, the  bike started , even with that showing on the dash.
Where do I go from here? In its present state, I can't trust it, and I'd like to use it for a short trip next month.

Have you looked for error codes, visible via a dash menu?

There is also a laptop/computer program that does more diagnostics. I forget its name.

Nothing worse than intermittent electrical problems. Can't diagnose it if it keeps hiding. All I can offer is my sympathy and a sincere wish that the intermittent problem turns into a constant failure. Those are much easier to diagnose.

The AI suggestion of a failure of the crankshaft position sensor is reasonable, if not necessarily likely. You could try to buy a used sensor on eBay for about $75 You can get one for $58 from MG Cycle and have it in case the problem becomes permanent. If you're on your trip, it could be a godsend.

Yes, I meant to add it showed error codes under the 'M' of :  01, 04, 05, 07, and a blinking 02. I haven't looked those up yet.
But, aside from being an intermittent issue, whichIknow makesitharder to diagnose, what would make it lose electrical power? As posted, the dash readings reset the odometer and other settings that you'd reset, say, when you gassed up or disconnected the battery. .

First the basics. Have you done a load test on the battery?
Have you cleaned all the battery terminals and engine grounds?
I'd pull every fuse and relay and clean then spray them with Deoxit. Flush out the key switch.

What Vagrant says. With that many sensor errors, it's not your problem. It's a power issue. 20yrs of cable corrosion under the ends behind the starter on the block.  Just cause the dash & meter show good surface numbers, it still fails, just like the engineer that designed it.
The Guzzi's need AMPs, Ford Falcon batt in the 1st ones. Their  20 ah batt is 18 maybe . All mine have 34ah batts in them & none fail

I'm with Vagrant now.
It occurs to me that the startus interruptus wiring may be bypassing all the poor connectivity that usually shows up as you try to start, but now shows up in other circuits instead.
