76 Convert - Is This Rear Fender Stock?

When I bought my Convert a few months ago it came with brackets and leather panniers that the seller indicated were standard for police bikes. I'm at a point where I'm looking into mounting the brackets and panniers, but the fender doesn't seem to look like it will work. Is it just something I'm missing, or is this the wrong fender for this bike?

IIRC, that's an Eldorado fender.

For the money you’re about to spend on a resurrection you could have this, and yours becomes a part bike.

According to Mark @ Moto Guzzi Classics, that Convert was one of BJ Swartz's personal bikes and was customized to suit him. The fenders are both from a Loopframe Guzzi. Since it was a police bike to begin with, the fenders wouldn't have been stainless, but rather painted steel. Police Converts had that type of taillight and mounting bracket.

The seat appears to be a reupholstered early 1000SP one.

But that's the point: it looks like the racks are supposed to attach to the rear fender via what the parts catalog calls a "gusset" (18488740), but the current fender doesn't have that attachment point. So, I'm trying to decide if I should just stick with the current fender and forget the panniers, or get a more correct fender and mount these cool old leather panniers. Or is there a third way, in which I have my fender and the panniers, too?

It is a nice looking bike. Regarding my bike, I already own it, meaning the money is already spent - it's already resurrected and I ride it almost every day - it's pretty addicting. I'm just considering if it's worth mounting the rack and leather panniers that came with the bike or just leave it like BJ set it up - I have to admit I like the look of the fenders as is.

Show us the racks. The originals didn't attach to the fender except at the very back and that attachment point isn't absolutely necessary.

Original saddlebag mounts. Upper mounting point attaches at the rear of the frame rail. Lower to the plates that the rear crashbars and mufflers mount to. You might be able to attach the rear one to the fender, but since it's not the original fender, I can't say for sure.

If everything lines up with the bolt holes to the frame (looks like it should since it’s stock) see how close the gusset comes to the fender. If it’s anywhere close I wouldn’t hesitate to drill a few holes and dream up a flat plate to connect the two...you won’t be hurting anything priceless. Original was just a small bolt thru the fender.
