v700 side covers

In all my years of Guzzying I thought I had learnt a lot but when I purchased my Eldorado some 30 years ago It came with V700 side covers which I straight away removed and stored in a dark corner of my shed and fitted the bike with the later vented covers , 30 years on Im cleaning up shed and find the covers and noticed how well made they are with bracing inside and a strong thumb screw support like something of a shipping container and nothing like the flimsy vented covers Im now using , why did Guzzi not continue with this quality , Im tempted to put them back on as they look different and what are the two brackets for on the inside do they hold a tool roll or something ?,Ray

Lucky you! They're a bit hard to find. They are much better made. Just a wild guess, but DeTomaso bought the company around the time they stopped using them, the later style was likely cheaper to make. Legend has it that he was a "lira pincher" supreme.
The brackets are for rubber bumpers, the same one used on the side and center stand stops. They snub up against the original battery hold down frame.
