California 1400 dip stick

New to a 2014 California 1400.  I think the oil filter is leaking and waiting on Amazon delivery of socket to see if it snugs up.
In checking how much oil lost, manual was worthless on reading the dipstick.
Which ring is oil level desired?  how much fluid is there between rings?

The warm oil level should be no higher than the mid point between the Add and Full marks. About 3.0 liters on an oil change. To include refilling the OEM sized oil filter. That should get you an oil level between the Add and the mid point between Add and half way to Full.

The oil system holds about 4 liters total at the factory. Between the oil cooler, the oil lines and the residual left in the engine: 3 liters on a refill is just about perfect. The residual 1 liter never drains out.

Do not ever run the 1400 hot oil level above the mid point. If you do, oil mist will get into the air box and potentially harm the $600 Demand Sensor.

I’ve read Moto Guzzi Service manuals for many decades. The 1400 manual is notoriously confusing. Reprints bought on eBay and such are typically the worst of the worst.

So the upward midpoint between the two rings, correct?

Also on a 2014 model, do not screw the oil stick back into the block to get a reading, just dip it back in the block ( with bike is in the upright position ) till it touches the threads to the block to read correct oil level .

I painted my dip stick end white so that it was easier to see. There is some confusing stuff in the manuals. The steering stem torquing procedure is a mess as an example.

If you’re new to the Moto Guzzi 1400 format like I am, I would absolutely highly recommend you join GuzziTech. Their 1400 section has more answers than you may think you have questions.

Late last year I bought an all black 2016 Eldorado. It only had 1450 miles on. It also had two of the most significant upgrades a 1400 can get. The GT fueling system combined with the GT exhaust system literally transforms the bike.

The correct oil filter socket arrived (76mm, 14 flute) and the filter snugged up quite a bit which I think stopped the leak (will know overnight).
Did a 5 mile loop and checked oil level on hot engine - level is half again above the high ring.
I'll try to suck out 1 liter after engine cools down and re-check.

Also look at the air box oil drain hose under the bike. About center where you’d expect a center stand to be. It has a plug on the end to drain the oil if needed.

Sucked out 525 ccs on cold engine and oil is now between the 2 rings.  Fixin to ride a loop and see where it is on a hot engine.
Will look for air box drain before I go.

Found a drain hose with no plug - it was dry.
Dipstick now between the rings on a hot engine (very close to mark on cold engine, but it is 90F in the garage)
