NGC - auto insurance mathematics
« on: July 22, 2026, 08:01:45 AM »
I have/had (5) drivers in my household, and (5) vehicles named on my policy. 6 mo ago my eldest son transferred his car to his own policy, but I looked at my own policy yesterday and both he and his car are still on MY policy (forgot to remove them).

So I went on-line and did the removals:

Remove son from policy, premium goes up $60/6-mo

Remove his car from policy, premium goes up $800/6-mo

What. The. You-know-what.

Anyone with knowledge of how insurance works care to explain why/how this math works? I understand multi-car discounts and the concept of spreading risk among multiple drivers/vehicles, but removing a driver can't increase risk, and the total # of miles driven by the remaining drivers remains constant......I don't get it.

So I backed out of the routine and did not change the policy (yet), cheaper to insure him & his car than remove them. What gives?

Call and speak to someone at the local office if that’s an option.

You're applying logic to the insurance business.

Be careful, sir - you might hurt yourself!

(Note that one also must  use great caution applying logic to
a government problem for the same reason! Is there a relationship here?!
Discuss privately amongst yourselves lest this post get deleted!
  )

My son had a similar experience. He drives an old Grand Marquis.
5 or 6 years ago, when my Mom sold her house, she gave him an older
Chevy Blazer in really nice shape. The insurance bill went DOWN several
hundred bucks! It went down enough to pay for the sales tax, excise tax,
registration, and inspection. Same coverage on both vehicles. A truly FREE car!

Why? No clue......

I am insured with a company that locks in your rate.  So, as long as you don't make any changes (add or subtract) the premium stays the same.
However, when I sold a car and went down from 4 to 3, my premium went up $800.00.  Hard to wrap your head around that.  One of my vehicles
is a 2016 RAM ProMaster High Roof.  I kept the interior pretty wide open with minimal build out so I can use as a truck to haul stuff and motorcycles,
and use cots to camp out of.  Difficult to find an insurance that will insure it.  Not sure why, especially since I put minimum miles on it yearly which
I documented to insurance company.  I think it has to do with most of the time these are used as business delivery vehicles and would have higher
rate of claims due to being on the highway daily.  Mine only has 35,000 miles on it in 10 years.

I also had the same issue with motorcycle insurance.  I went from 5 to 3 and my rate went up.  When I inquired, I was told that because I have
fewer bikes, I am more likely to put more miles on a particular bike and thus have a higher probability of an accident vs same miles spread over
more bikes.  If anyone has any input on this pretzel logic I would love to hear it.  So, I get a discount for multiple motorcycles but less of a discount
when I have 3 verses 5 bikes.   Insurance is the ultimate business.  You have to have it, but are hesitant to use it in many instances because if you
do, your rates will usually go up.  Even if you went many years with out any claims.

And best of all, when you need them, they will come up with every possible excuse and stalling tactic to avoid paying!

Yes, I'm about to call them, but afraid of showing my hand that I want to just continue to hold dual-coverage for one particular vehicle if it SAVES me $$. That'll show them.

A couple of years ago when I added the V100 to my motorcycle policy with Progressive, my premium went down by a few bucks. So for some strange reason 4 bikes cost more than 5 bikes to insure.

I find it interesting that removing a driver will result in an increased premium to you.

As for vehicles, each motorcycle I have added to my progressive policy with liability coverage rather than comprehensive coverage has reduced the rate. Because of this I have bikes insured that I haven't ridden in years. They are on 5-year antique plates, so between the low expense of that and the negative cost of insuring them, they remain road legal despite collecting dust in storage.
