V85 bevel drive seal leak

I’m seeing a little oil at the drain hole just ahead of the final drive. I drained the oil and confirmed it was not overfilled, 160 ml.
Haven’t gone any further but I guess it must be the bevel drive input seal. Looking at the service manual I can’t tell if this is a do-at-home thing. Do you have to remove the pinion from the drive housing and disassemble it to get at the seal?

I can’t get the search to work. Digging around some more it sounds like the pinion seal replacement is straightforward.

So I typed in "How much oil in final drive" as suggested. What came up were some links from this site so I clicked on a link for the V85tt oil amounts and the amount of oil suggested and endorsed by Vagrant is 160cc. So let me again ask where the 130cc figure came from?

Apparently the newer models owners manual references 130cc but that took some digging to reveal many threads stated the 160cc level and when I ask AI this is the answer I get (below). I wonder how many V85tt owners have heard about the 130cc level?

It was discussed here many times a while ago.  130 is the amount and it was referenced at the time.

The manual for my '26 V7 850 says 125 to 130 cc's. I don't know if the V85 is the same or not.

When I had a V85TT, it spewded gear oil out of the vent.  I was in some muddy trench and spinning the rear wheel and the Traction control would engage, so I figured that the quick stoppage would fling it out the vent.   I did drop the gear lube and reinstalled 160cm.

Just an FYI, when searching for reasons the 2026 final drive oil capacity is reduced I got a couple of AI replies stating the new models final drives have been redesigned with a smaller housing therefore less oil.

AI responses don't actually know, if you want to know compare the parts diagrams and see which, if any, part numbers changed and go from there for a more informed dive into it.

My V7 850 only leaked out that swingarm hole when the final drive was chewing up gears from being improperly shimmed (not serviceable, per Moto Guzzi). When it was overfilled, it leaked from between the wheel and final drive. YMMV on the V85.

The part number for that "max 130cc" etched plug is 2B012828. I bought one for my V7 850 after dealing with this same issue.

That makes sense, if you put zero in, it doesn’t leak at all…!

That's what I'm running in my '23 Travel, no leaks, etc.

I took the one made of Mozzarella out of mine @ 2,000 km and installed a German one. The original was as hard as a bull’s arse and leaked like a biscuit.
This one is perfect after 40,000 km and I refill with 150-160 ml.
I cannot bring myself to put 130 ml in, I blew my nose yesterday and more than that came out…!
Just seems cruel.

As I recall the 2012 Gold wing uses 130 cc and all the heat from that engine and the exhaust pipes run right by it yet it survives. They just need lube. They don’t need to be drowned in oil.

You would want to compare the rear transmission components rather than the completed assembly, as the revision of an individual component, such as the fill plug, may result in an updated part number for the completed assembly.
