I have a nice set of stock mufflers on my T but as someone told me, it sounds like an asthmatic budgie!
Is there a way of making them sound a bit better without cutting the mufflers to bits?

No. I've seen them with holes drilled in the back, and a drill bit run up through them. All that did was make them sound like crap.

Replica Dunstalls will wake that bike up. You want the wide mouth versions, not the tapered cones. They are built like the originals and won’t break the bank and sold world wide.

Just be aware that a louder muffler does not mean "better performance"; it means "louder."  I have personally been involved in dyno tests where a straight-through muffler REDUCED power compared to a stock muffler.

This is true with the Dunstalls as well. They have a baffle across the bore to maintain back pressure.
Punch that out and power goes waaaaaay down.

I will bet both versions of the Dunstall Mufflers are identical inside.
The only advantage of the wide mouth version is the baffle can be used to repair a set of
Original Dunstalls for someone doing a period restoration.

If you can afford it the Lafranconi Competizione mufflers are very well made with beautiful chrome work and a nice deep sound without being very loud. Look good too on my T-3.
