Low Volt - Norge Alt check
« on: August 23, 2026, 02:46:53 PM »
VroomHilda, My 07 Norge hit 50K mi yesterday and has 22K mi on alt belt.  She starts/run fine but only putting out 13.4-13.6 volts.  I keep it on charger when not riding.

With quality hand held voltage meter tested at battery - 13.1 off. 13.3 at idle and no more than 13.5-13.6 at 2500-4500 rpm throttle?

Here are a few pics of the belt. Much easier doing this my newly acquired HF lift. *I can twist belt 90 degrees with moderate force and move belt side to side 1/4 inch.
belt looks fine close up.  I am unsure of the adjusting belt tension bolt. Including picture.

QUESTION: Is there any way to voltage check the alternator without removal?  Need I worry  under 14V now or what?  Once it starts battery is no longer a question is my understanding.  Thanks.

Hell yeah.
With engine at or above 3,000 rpm, put a known good voltmeter across the battery terminals, it won’t definitively tell you what the alternator is putting out, but it will tell you what the battery is receiving.
If your alternator is up to speed but you are not getting 14 + Volts across the battery, you will need to check BOTH ends of BOTH leads, then battery condition etc.
I have had mine out for checking on a test bench recently and it is not a huge task.
As you know, mine is an ‘07 like yours, so I can give you all the clues.

Thanks Peter.   I was trying to ascertain without pulling off the tank and air box and TB's - if possible.  Yes I have been taking readings at the battery.

You don't need 14.3, just 13.7 to be good. That is w/a good battery. After all it's a 12V system

Thanks Steve,  I was thinking the battery is out of the loop, after starting but perhaps it is nothing more than that. It tests fine, starts with volt meter but not load tested and it is
2-3 years old.

had same issues with my 2007 Breva 1100 at 38,000 miles, I ran an extra dedicated linked-fuse wire direct from the alternator to the battery.  The original harness has undersized wire, get corroded and then you have less resistance.
