Need advice for 2013 Norge Red Triangle Light and ECU unplugged
« on: September 08, 2026, 10:07:14 AM »
2013 Norge (14k miles) had been sitting in the garage for a couple of months. Before doing anything else, I connected a battery tender, and it took several hours before giving a solid green light.
I then tried to start it. Warning lights and gauge sweep all seemed normal, I could hear the fuel pump run for a second, and it sounded normal, but then the red triangle light illuminated, and the ECU unplugged icon came up. Of course it wouldn't crank.
Nothing has been done to it since the last time I rode it in late spring.
At that time I had discovered a mouse nest in the air cleaner box. Had to remove the tank of course to get to it, but I didn't see any damage to any wiring. After cleaning out the mess, I did a check ride and everything seemed fine. (I also installed a metal screen on the air box intake nozzle to keep any more rodents out).
Since then, the bike has been sitting and nothing else done to it except for re-charging the battery a couple of days ago.
I've checked the fuzes under the seat and they look fine. Battery connections look good, clean and tight. Bike is clean, and has rarely even gotten wet.
I'm getting ready to remove the tank again, ugh what a pain, to look for any wiring issues, but would appreciate any advice on what to look for, expect, or even how to verify if the ECU has gone bad or not. And why would that have happened after just sitting?
There are no dealers anywhere near where I live (Maryland) except for a scooter shop in VA who by their own admission don't really know Guzzis.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Checked to see that the main connector to the ECU is connected and/or not loose?

I haven't removed the tank yet. I will be checking that along with all the other wiring that I can see once I get the danged thing off.

If the quick connector on your fuel line is anything like mine on my on 07 Norge it is easy to break it so be careful. It helps to push the fuel line inward toward the connector with one hand and then at the same time pull it away from the connector with your other hand all the while wiggling the line off the connector. A lot of people toss the stock quick connector for another connector that is easier to deal with.

Thanks, but as I suspected, it's not the battery. I swapped it with a known good one and it made no difference.
I also removed the tank and did not see any wiring that looked damaged, nor any loose connectors. Is the ECU the thing stuck under the frame rails behind the steering head?! Ya know, I love riding this bike and I love looking at it, but Damn, it's no fun at all to work on. If that's the ECU, the wire bundle connecting to it appears to be tight and undisturbed, as best as I can see. I haven't tried to remove it yet.
So this looks like it might be the ECU at fault? Is there a way to confirm that beyond swapping it out?
Thanks again!

Do you have any dash codes? If so, what are they?

Start again before swapping out the ECU.
Did you checked the fuses visually or with a meter?
The ECU fuse is the 3A seconded from the left and according to the hand book is permanent feed even with key out.
Like already suggested go through your ecu and dash fault codes.

I checked the fuzes with a meter (both ohms and volts) and they all look good.
I just entered the diagnostic menu, and found that nothing was listed in the ECU menu, but the Dashboard menu had several.
This is with the tank off and the wire harness from the tank disconnected.

Odd I looked in the Moto Guzzi Service manual and it doesn't even really list what the 05 Code is which your dash is currently showing active. Anybody else had an 05 error code on a second gen Norge and deciphered what it means? On my first gen 2007 Norge the 05 error is related to a fuel sensor failure which from what I understand can be a consequence of unplugging the main connector for the fuel gauge/efi when you take the gas tank completely off. NE 1 else got a different theory? I would plug that fuel gauge/efi connector back up and see if that 05 code goes away and if it don't you may have found a culprit. Have you tried cycling the key 2-3 times to see if it makes the red triangle light go off?

I would think with the fuel pump disconnected you would have an error code up.
Did you check you had 12V continuous across the 3A fuse holder?

Yes I have 12v across the 3A fuze, and I tried cycling the key several times which didn't make any difference.

2013 Norge (14k miles) had been sitting in the garage for a couple of months....

It sounds like it could be corrosion. One common problem that leads to this is a poor connection in the ground wire on the ECU. You should check that and clean it. If you haven't.

If you search for "ECU unplugged" in the search box you'll find at least several discussions. But since Pete Roper named the ECU ground as likely I'd try that.

Dash 05 is the fuel level sensor I believe. Pulled these out of my files. As others have said Guzzi Diag lets you get deeper.
