Rennsport upgrade info
« on: March 28, 2013, 07:24:59 PM »
Can anybody give me info on what Rennsport did to Moto Guzzi's?I cant fine much on the Internet?.

Ive got a LeMans 1 that has Rennsport headguards, dual plug heads, many other upgrades of the day.I was closely inspecting the vin on the bike and noticed that rennsport (must have been Rennsport)had stamped their name just above where "Moto Guzzi" is stamped on the block.

This tells me they might heve done engine work as well.Trying to find out what that might have been and as a long shot if anybody knows if Rennsport kept any records.

I had a Motion Corvette way back when and was able to get details on it even though Motion was no longer in business.Any help is appreciated.Jordan

p.s. Somebody please give me a quick lesson on how to upload pictures....it would be nice to download a couple of the bike!!

One rennsport was charlie rice, a mad machinist out of ojai calif. He is into drag racing now, but at one time his golden ox ale sponsored guzzi was a winner. The rider was fred eiker

For pictures I use photobucket.  Upload your pictures there and then copy and paste the link here.  Other places work as well or better.

The precursor to this board was the MGCL, the Moto Guzzi Correspondance list.  Back in the days of squealing dial up modems Charlie Rice was trumpeted as a savior and then reviled as a charleton.  It seems that highly tuned bikes are liable to blow up when you least expect it.  I fear the documentation was lost when the villagers stormed the castle and put everything to the torch.

One of my favorite comments on that topic was about Raceco, U.S. or G.B.?  Someone opined:  "The company name is Raceco not Last-forever-co".

That said I would do some very careful measurements before trusting a motor with that pedigree.  Ed Milich would probably know the scoop.

Jordan,
Good advice from guzziownr, check the innards carefully. Remember it was built to be flogged and who could be blamed for doing just that with it! ;-T
I know of 2 dual plugged big carbed round case engines that blew from rod failure. These were NOT 850 LeMans but an SP and a CX100. As many of you know they shared the same engine. Turns out the rods in the SP engine were different, not up to making the big power or high revs.
That being said IIRC these had had the heads redone and cam replaced but the bikes themselves never saw Rennsport proper. I rebuilt the CX100 engine while employed at Midway. Carillos and 1050 cylinder kit, an even better cam and it was WICKED fast.
Enjoy the Rennsport, it is one of very few.

Amazing you guys!.I found more out tonight than I found out in years?.To be honest I doubt I would approach what the bike is capable of so not real concerned with any type of mechanical catastrophe.

Ive got two 91 1000S's and three LM1's and am always doing something with all ofthem in some fashion.I just happened to focus on this one this spring.Worked with Mike Baldwin in Darien Ct in 1976 and so the bug bit pretty hard with the introduction to Guzzi's coming from him.Its proved fatal ever since. Was lucky enough to have a few escapades with him before he left to join various factory teams.A great experience no doubt.

I'll post when I find out something on the technical aspects of the bike.

I will post some pix (if I can get injundaves daughter to email me how...).I flew to Atlanta and picked the bike up 8 or 9 years ago and I could tell immediately someone put a lot care (read money) into it.Thanks again, huge help.Jordan

My daughter says:

Open up a photobucket account and upload your photos to it.
Select the photo you want from your library and click on it. This should bring up the single photo.
Right click on the photo and click 'Copy Image URL'

On your post, click on Insert Image (2nd icon from the left in the bottom row.)
Paste the URL between the [img.] [/img.] that appeared (without the periods) :)

I say good luck!

We have met.  It was a long time ago in NYC at "bike night" on Spring St.  Glad to hear you are still an enthusiast.  Put your location in your signature line (look under profile at the top of this screen).  We don't need to know your phone number and underwear size but a zip code would be helpful.

One of the reasons to run dual plugs is to prevent detonation.  You can run higher compression without explosive consequences but then the can of worms starts to open.
