It's been so long since we grew wheat I looked to see if I had clicked on an old thread.  Sure wish we were getting some of that rain. Last year, it wouldn't *quit* raining..

Gliderjohn, Guzzi content. Why didn't you cut the wheat with a scythe, (how many even know how to use one) shock it and later lay it out on a tarp and beat it to get the wheat out?

Good memories of the old time wheat harvest using the old threshing machines. All the neighbors got together to help each other with the harvest. And mercy, the women folk put on a feed that I still remember from 69 years ago.

Damn, you like to sweat don't you? Closest to what you describe is cutting corn/or a type of sugar cane that was put in the concrete silos for winter feed for cattle. It was a community event as equipment and labor was still shared well into the 70s. Yea, which ever place we were filling the wives put on memeroble lunch (dinner)  spreads. :food:

Celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary with a ride on the Mille, for a picnic at the top of McClure Pass. Dozens of motorcycles touring thru, and a squadron of three Slingshots.

I rode to Dadeville for lunch, took an afternoon nap and made shrimp & grits for supper. Hangin' out with the dogs and having a gin and lemonade now. All is well! :thumb:

I'd heard that the state completed paving Cottonwood Pass last summer, and I'd never ridden it. To get there I have to cross Kebler Pass, of which about 25 miles is unpaved but usually graded smooth. So the bike of choice was the Funduro. I invited my neighbor Mike, who has a 2004 GS1200 and years and years of dirt riding experiience.

The route was Kebler Pass (10,000 feet) to Crested Butte and Cottonwood Pass to Buena Vista, then Cottonwood Pass to Almont and Ohio Pass back to the west side of Kebler. I followed Mike on dirt, he mostly followed me on pavement.

We made good time. On Kebler we startled a young elk cow and a bear cub crossing the road. The new paving on Cottonwood is spectacular, and the curves tight and magnificent. We stopped at the top (12,125 feet)  and encountered a local rider on a Ducati Monster -- an ideal ride for this road.

We carried sandwiches and lunched in a city park in Buena Vista. This a usually a big tourist town because rafting trips on the Arkansas start here. Looked like all the restaurants were open but everyone in town wore a mask.

On the way back we avoided Crested Butte and rode Ohio Pass (10,065 feet), a much rougher ride than Kebler. The last five miles to the top are steep and rocky. Mike just tractored on up and I worked hard to keep up, staying 50 feet back to avoid the worst of the dust. Even so I hit a lot of stuff I never saw and spent most of that stretch standing on the pegs.

We made a side trip to Irwin Lake at 10,000 feet. This place is well known to powder skiers because the Irwin Lake Lodge, visible in the distance here is home to a cat-skiing operation.

We hit a little rain on the way down but no really hot weather until the last 15 miles. Great day, great workout.

BTW there are two Cottonwood Passes in Colorado. The other runs from Gypsum south to Carbondale.  I drove it a couple of times as it's a sporty shortcut between Aspen and Vail. Until recently it was dirt, with some rough washouts near the top, but a couple of years ago the south side was paved and the north side closed to traffic. I suspect the north side has reopened. Will have to ride it and find out.

A couple of years ago.. it took less than a week. Now, however.. dunno. I sent a bunch of Guzzi parts I made all over the world at the end of May. So far.. the guy from Sweden hasn't gotten his yet. NZ, Finland, Belarus,(!) Oz, have been delivered. England and Ireland made it in sort of normal times.
Just order it. Shipping services are slammed, but are still working.

Great harvesting weather. Trying to get it in before tomorrow night when hail is a possibility.

I miss that a  little. As a kid, , I worked the wheat harvest out in western okla one summer.  Those 1/2 mile + fields got kinda boring.
Then worked in an elevator loading rail cars, unloading trucks, etc. for a couple of years.
BTW. The TBA guys,( tires batteries and accessories) were trading  the stuff for sex. Also horse feed, anything we had was for (trade). The propane guy was fired after repeated warnings about same.
Yes, I was approached by women to ( trade ), one wanted a battery, I but didn't bite.
For quite a while, I didn't know what was going on, no one  mentioned it.
We got a new manager, who actually did inventory, that stopped the trading. Those farm women......

At least a couple of good things about pretty much staying homebound. Due to eating out much less noticing we are spending quite a bit less, some of that is less gas purchases also. Second, recently had my annual checkup and for the first time in years my BP was 120/70, lost five pounds and all my blood test numbers were good to excellent. First time for that too in quite a few years. Some benefits I guess.

Perfect excuse to cook at home! I made some pan seared scallops and linguine with olive oil and garlic last night that was the BEST I EVER had. May not be the best for weight loss and BP, but DANG it was GOOD! Salad tonight

As it decided to stop raining today I thought I would start cutting up a trailer-load of (free ) firewood with my 10" Ryobi compound mitre slide saw.  Ok, its a cheapie from 2016 and has cut up a fair amount of firewood, but it started making that strange noise like a whale farting which usually means the brushes are on the way out.

Fortunately, Mr Ryobi makes them easy to get out as they are under external caps.  When I took the caps off I found that in both brushes the woven copper wire linking the brush to the brass cap had detached out of the brush.  I have never had this happen before, most unusual.  It's out of warranty but hopefully Ryobi has improved the quality of the new brushes I will have to get.

Worked out well as my wife came back with two tress to replace one that had turned it's toes up, so with no firewood to cut I was able to plant aforesaid trees, seriously prune some others, generally tidy up the front and put a smile on her dial.

I'm a happy camper, my old buddy Tim Pierce helped me get my oldest Guzzi running after being parked for over 6 months. Taught me some new DelOrto things I didn't know about. The old beast pulls like a freight train. And now she rides like a dream with all new suspension goodies. A couple more shake down cruises, give all the bolts a check over and she's ready for some twisties! Can't wait!  :thumb:

At least I've had some work lately. Tuned a BillyBob then today swapped tunes in ECU, yes, this one he likes. Only tools I needed was 2.5mm allen, spark plug socket & laptop Every map idles different.
Now if I can only get a C14 clutch, maybe the slow boat from Italy.
Been finishing up my latest MyECU map, it's only been 9 yrs in the making and gets 50+ mpg and really hauls butt. Cliff made a tool for us w/his ECU, enter you map and you get 3D or line graph. Ride Safe.

Fabulous Dusty - thanks. Convert is running a treat. Barely even leaks now (and yes, there is ATF in the tank). Rode much of the day on narrow gravel 'colonization' roads. People who've never ridden a Convert have no idea what a treat they are missing.

Nick

PS The colonization roads didn't achieve much. Even though it was free, the land was too barren, tough and the winters too cold for settlement ever to gain much of a hold. The area is full of abandoned farmsteads and old wrecked log cabins now. As for the FN?  they knew better than to try and extract a living from those areas - except for a bit of seasonal hunting.

Loaded the mighty Nismo today for  a trip to eastern Ohio/Western Pa. I might be giving my sidecar rig to my son, if'n he displays any aptitude for driving it safely. Hope to take a trip to the ancestral farm, in Westmoreland County. Its been in the family since the late 1700s.  Time to see family and old friends. Cheers!
