Rear end venting?
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:26:26 AM »
I took my 98 Cali out for a ride today to heat up engine and rear drive for an oil change.I drained the engine oil then started taking the drain plug out of rear drive.I didn't take out the fill screw and when I had the bottom(drain) plug almost out the oil came out like it was under pressure(it was) and made a loud hiss!Is this unit supposed to be vented or is it OK to build up pressure like this? Also Ill be sure to take out the fill plug first in the future to let this pressure off! Thanks

Some are vented, some are not. It doesn't hurt to vent them. One way to do it is drill a hole in the top of the fill plug. Tap it for a 10mm banjo bolt. The buy a SS braided brake line with only one banjo fitting on it and extend it up under the seat or tank. Anyplace that is dry and out of the way. It wouldn't hurt to install a small filter (think small fuel fuel) filter to keep dust from entering.

An alternative to venting is to burp it. When you change the rear drive oil, take it on a good long drive to heat it up. Then, stop somewhere and quickly get off the bike and release the pressure. It will then have a vacuum when you put the cap back on and let it cool.

No but back in the seventies in Oregon, there used to be an old time rock & roll band called "Buzz Farts and the boppa dips".
 They were pretty good too.

wouldn't rear drive pressure cause lubricant to be forced out and then fling onto tire and wheel?

wouldn't rear drive pressure cause lubricant to be forced out and then fling onto tire and wheel?

My 2007 Calvin had its rear end oozing and dripping on the rear tire and rim as it sat from Spring to Summer in the increasing heat.

I pulled out the level check plug, and it whooshed air out, and about 1 teaspoon of lube.

I would think the pressure made it leak.

So I found this thread.  I assume my (motorcycle's) rear end is not vented.  I'll ride it some (was waiting for new 'improved' tail light bracket which is now installed), and monitor things.  Maybe try burping, and then venting, depending???

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

The rear drive is supposed to vent through the transmission.
