Take a pair of knackered Lafranconis...
« on: February 10, 2015, 01:48:43 PM »
...and it give's you an excuse to tinker.
Bought a pair of original Competitione cans from ebay that have seen better days.

Marked out the cut line...

...and removed the end of the can.

Then cut back the end cap so it can be welded to the end of the can.

Going to get the end caps blasted so I can spray the internals to prevent corrosion before getting them welded to the cans, smooth out the join and finally ceramic coated. Apart from the obvious damage / rust, the rest of the cans are in good condition. I was planning on fitting some of these to my LM2 but never liked the embossed 'Lafranconi' on the new cans.
No idea how they'll sound but expecting loudish without being anti-social.
There are still some baffles in the main can that can't be seen in the photo.

Is that all that is inside one of them?

No; at the forward end of the scallop for the rear suspension units is a baffle with a central hole of approx 1" diameter with 4 radial holes of approx ΒΌ" diameter.
No quite straight through.

End caps welded on and cans check fitted.

Next up, ceramic coating.

Nice job. I did something similar with a set of Valteks for my Ambo. I cut about 4-6 in off the ends (which had been damaged by battery acid), shortened the baffles, and re-installed the end plates. Looks good.

Now I'm going to have a look into mine on the GT. That seems to be a lot of restriction in stock form.
