New pads and tires
« on: February 26, 2015, 04:19:16 PM »
Installed new Avon Storm2 Ultra fr and rr and steering is lighter. Feel is like having your hand as the contact patch. Transition from side to side is linear and smooth with no added pressure to keep a line in the curve. The Michelins were way better than the Dunlops but the Avons are better still. IMO.

The front pads were gone and EBC HH ones fitted. I went for a 15 mile ride through the residential area while cautiously applying front only with the clutch lever pulled in. The first few miles felt like 250cc period drum units but I could feel the pads coming in after about 5 miles. Stops from 40 MPH were solid and the speeds were upped to 60 and braking applied. Heat built up quickly and towards the end some really hard stops were tried. A couple of lockups but careful modulation allowed me to resume rolling without complete release of the lever. That was something the stock FF compound did not allow. Overall, very pleased.

So satisfying to work on your own crap.

Your post would be vastly more informative if you would let us know what bike you are referring to.

Do those pads smell when stopping hard? I've installed new pads, and when I stop hard, not locking up the tire but a good 3 finger, the pads I just recently added smell, like burning, goes away as soon. As I take off again. What's with that?

Oops-V11 Café Sport. These are the 6800 series calipers, 4 piston, two pad. The Benelli has the gold series 4 pad and these feel like those with the same tires. Smell yes. "Somethin's Burnin' and I think it's looove!!!"

Went for a freeway ramp strafing run today on the V11. Nothing crazy, just moderate lean as we have less than 100 miles on the new Avons. This bike has been transformed, handling wise. Temps in the low 50's with no slippage. Even when new, the PR's required increased bar pressure to hold a line in the corners.

I need a new front tire.  All the tread is on the side of my Dumlop and you have to muscle the grips in a tight turn.  Where'd ya get 'em, what'd ya pay for em?

Amazon.com was my best friend for tires. But I'm cheap and bought Shinkos. Can't complain. They stick like nails to wood.
