 Back in my merchant marine days, I sailed on a ship that had been run by the Germans for a number of years.  The American company that bought it had the conversion done in a Japanese shipyard.  All the placarding and manuals were translated from German  to English by the Japanese.  It made for some interesting reading.

You would THINK that these companies would hire someone to put their owner's manuals into idiomatic English (or whatever the destination language is).   They could do it via the Internet, and it would be dirt cheap.   

Here they are, putting a new power generator on the market, probably have millions in design and production costs bringing it to market .... and then they make themselves sound like they don't know what they're doing because they didn't Email a copy of the manual to Lannis and have him correct the language and pay him $500 measly dollars.   And as a result, they end up with these "wherein lurks the evil skid demon" malapropisms ... ?   

These people are cheaper than Guzzisti, looks like ....

I remember the owner's manual for my '56 Triumph T110 said you would "earth" something to ground the line.  And you adjusted the "tickover", not the idle.  If the engine was missing going up a hill, it was "dropping shots".  Not arcane or hard to understand at all.  After all, they invented the language.  I thought it was pretty cool.
