Another dumb question re: fuel filter on Stone
« on: March 12, 2015, 06:23:05 PM »

Well I decided the fuel filter should be replaced.  I got a new one from GuzziTech along with the clamps.

I searched on the site for some insight into the procedures for replacing the filter but "I" need more specific
info.   First empty the tank.  Apparently yes the tank has to come off.  Then I disconnect everything connected to the tank.
Apparently the fuel cap assembly is taken completely off so you have more room to work inside the tank.  How is it
possible to get work inside the tank with such little space?  Anyone have some tips I could use? Also I thought I
read somewhere that people were having a difficult time getting the tank back in place.  What's that all about?

Again thanks for all your input. :bow

I thought I had some picture but sorry I don't.

1.  Yes the tank comes off the bike

2.  You do not remove the fuel cap (at least I didn't), once the tank is off the bike you will be able to see where the fuel pump assembly is screwed into the bottom of the tank.  Remove the screws and you will with some fiddiling be able to remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank.  I actually stopped and asked questions on Wildguzzi because I thought it was taking a bit too much effort to get the fuel pump out of the tank but I was doing it right, just had to get the thing turned a certain way so that it would come out of the tank.  After it is out you will see the filter and it is easy to switch out.  Put the fuel pump back inside the tank.

3.  As for the difficulty in putting the tank back on, that seemed to be more prevalent with the older plastic tanks and not the metal tank your Stone has.  You will want to check the pucks that the tank rests on while you have the tank off, it seemed some V7's (mostly Racers?) had the mounting screws loosening up and that could damage the tank over time.  You will see the pucks on either side of the frame once you get the tank off.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.  That sounds simple enough.  I hope I don't have to "eat those words".

I'm glad I asked this question.  I had "searched" the site for fuel pump posts and I was getting somewhat
confused.  Maybe it's my old age.    I've been talking with some of my riding buddies but they all have
Japanese bikes and apparently their bikes have a plate on the bottom on the tank that you take off
to get to the filter.

Pat,
When the time comes to put the tank back on, if it's mounted similar to the tank on my EV, a thorough spray with silicon lube on the pucks & the slots inside the tank tunnel they fit into makes the job easier.

Hi Nic

I had dinner with Will and a few riding buddies on Wednesday night.   Yeah Will said he'd do it but I always have to cook
something for him in return.   Anyway, I still don't know much about this Stone and it makes me feel a little
uncomfortable taking off on a trip with it.  I like to "think" I have enough general knowledgeable to know I can
handle some problems on the road but this new bike is just too modern for me.  I'm use to Loops.

Will fell while riding in the woods in the campground and has a shoulder injury.   Drs. can't agree on what's
wrong with it.  He bought a used bike last Fall I think....forgot what kind it is.  He still has his V Strom and
has just bought a used 1000 V Strom.  Hasn't picked it up yet.

By the way, I finally got a check for my Beemer.  Thank goodness that's sold.   The T3 will probably be up for sale before summer.

Hope to see you soon at Will's place.

Pat, just to make this clear...you need to take the tank off the bike, turn the tank upside down, and then remove the plate that you see.  That plate is actually the fuel pump assembly, which includes the fuel filter.  It's really fiddly to get the fuel pump and assorted hoses out of the tank, just when you are convinced you are doing it all wrong the darn thing will come out.  This operation is similar to what you go through with many other modern fuel injected bikes so Will should be able to figure it out.  Chances are your filter is plastic and swelling so installing an all metal one is a good idea.

Hope to see you soon at Will's place.

Pat,
Should be there on April 30th and May 3rd, on my way to and from the 2015 Georgia Mountain Rally (BMW) at Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiawassee.
Called Will earlier, but no answer. If you can wait, we can do the filter swap then.

Thanks for the offer Nic.   Had dinner with Will and the riders last night.  Said he could do it today but I'm busy today
Anyway, it's now snowing lightly here.  I'll keep that date in mind in case I wait until then.   Not riding it anyway.
My seat is still at the upholsterer.

Error.....I posted earlier that Will bought a 1000 V Strom.    Oops, it's a used 1000 SV that he bought.
