Exhausted Over Norge Header Gaskets
« on: March 13, 2015, 02:31:55 PM »
So ... I was about to R&R the gaskets at the headers on my Norge.

Hmmmm.

If this is a dumb question, forgive me.

But, as they appear to be different front and back -- with more "cushion" on one side than the other -- which face goes toward the cylinder and which toward the header pipe end?

At least one inquiring mind would be grateful for your (gentle) reply.   :D

Thanks.

Bill

P.S.  Hurry, please.  Kathi is driving back right now from Erie; she just called; ETA 6:11. I need to get up to the house and make some pretense of cleaning before she gets home.   :wife: ;D

Well, thanks to a phone call from someone who understands the distaff-inspired urgency of my request  ;), I now know the answer.

If you care ...

The one on the left of the pic would be against the incoming header pipe; the one on the right would face the cylinder wall.

Well, shix, Steve.

I was hoping no one would notice that and that this thread would fade into obscurity.  ::)

Anyway, I did figure that out and, happily, had the right ones, too.   ;D

And, as you know, the same "rule" applies so I got the right side facing the right direction.

I'm in Atlanta again next week, so maybe we can find time for lunch?

I see from the measure that they are both Imperial and Metric sized.  No wonder you were confused Bill.

Careful tazio; you'll end up helping change the throw-out bearing.

I'm ignoring the tormentors but, despite the inflammatory popcorn emoticon, I'll respond to you because we are red Norge blood brothers.   ;D

I have spent way more time on the Griso over past couple of years than the Norge.  As I want to take the latter to the national in New Hampshire in June, and will have Kathi along, I wanted to give it a "depot-level" once-over.

So, in addition to the usual R&R fluids and filters, I also want to ensure the tupperware was not committing unseen suicide and to find out the source of some oil weepage, too. Well, once in that far, it's hard (for me, anyway) not to make her as nude as I can just to clean her up.

I pulled the pipes for access to clean some of the oil off the lump.  One of the exhaust gaskets looked fine and i wasn't planning to replace.  But, I couldn't see the other and mucked it up when I went looking closer.  That led to this "which side goes where" thread that has morphed into a pile-on-Bill frenzy.  :D

BTW, most of the oil on the Norge seems to have come from some hamfisted tech (named Hagan, btw) torquing down the TLM filler/dipstick onto the o-ring so tightly that it ceased to function as a seal.  That and some sloppy -- the same "tech" is the guilty culprit   ::) -- filling oil down that narrow TLM tube.

Time more than torque did the same with the EV, resulting in an inexplicable-to-me "leak."  Interestingly, at least so far, the EV now sits in the Moto Grappa without any incontinence issues whatever after under-pressure running and just letting gravity work.

Hoping same will be the case with the Norge.

While the Norge is on the lift, I also hope to figure out why the ABS no longer works and do some detailing of otherwise hard-to-reach

Anyway, that's why.  Looking forward to riding that sweet beast unto New England.  Have to add, tho, that the HDM has been hinting that it, too, could use a long road trip.   ;)
