Norge rear brake
« on: March 16, 2015, 06:29:41 AM »
Just curious whether there were any issues with early Norge rear brakes and air getting in the system? Seems like I had heard something about this before? Seeing that I'm looking for another Norge, it's something I wanted to be clear on.

Yep.
FWIW, I never did cure it on mine. I just hung a machine vise off the lever over night, and it would be good in the morning.

My Norge rear brake is not working, no pedal resistence. Hanging a small weight off the pedal may fix it?

Odd. Could the MC piston have too much return travel?

Is this real advise or tongue in cheek?

I do the same, maybe once a month or two. Just hang a weight on the brake pedal over night.

If you have *some* pedal, it will. If you have none, no. A 20 lb. or so weight ought to do it.

If there's no pedal, you can't put any pressure in the lines. The air won't make it to the master cylinder. SOL. Fill the system from the brake bleeder valve, and you'll probably have *some* pedal.

So, the big question is why? I don't think any of us thinks that's normal?

Funny that neither of my '07's ever did that!

This happens every two months or so to my Norge.  It is also reported to happen on some Ducati models 1000CC and bigger.
My hypothesis is that the exhaust is too close to the rear master cylinder.  Thus the intense heat causes bubbles to form in the fluid.  This heat also breaks down the fluid faster than normal.
As a fix I added some exhaust tape around the exhaust near the rear MC and aluminum heat reflective tape around the MC.  It had alleviated the issue for some time until the exhaust wrap came loose.

Now I just do the weight hang method every two months or so.

Overall it is a minor annoyance and it wouldn't stop me from buying an early Norge.

My silencer is on on the left and the caliper is on right.I don't think this is the problem.

I am referring the location of the master cylinder.  Not the caliper.

It has *something* to do with the ABS. I read on a French forum to bleed the brake with the ABS active. Never tried it, though..sounds like a PITA.

Hi Sam,

Good to hear from you. Only a new Master Cylinder? That's not too bad. I wonder what that costs ::) Maybe it pays to by a white one ;)

Jerry,
I totally drained all of the fluid, used a vacuum pump to refill the system and then pumped the system up for at least twice after riding and have not had any additional problems. The original fluid was real dark and I presume contaminated with water. I now have over 76,000 miles and all is GOOD!

I replaced my brake fluid last summer. Have never had a problem with my 09 Norge rear brake. After flushing the rear and refilling I ran it several times up and down our 150 yard long driveway activating the ABS a few times and bleed again. Being a few have complained I thought that may be extra insurance to prevent trouble down the road. They don't hold that much anyways.

Randy,

Good info. Thanks! Where have you been? Left Florida? I'm back for the winter and maybe full time.

Sam,

Good to hear from you again! Seems like I remember hearing a few years ago about master cylinder (rear)issues. From the responses so far, it's hard to tell whether it's a master cylinder or fluid issue? Or whether it's just the color of the Norge ;)

Gentlemen:
I research the issue intensively even on German forums when I bought my 09 in 2011. Unfortunately there is no fix. It is a design flaw in the ABS unit. It has been fixed on later models.
The only cure is to bleed the brake. I always carry a bleed kit with me, it just takes a few minutes. If you want more info you need to dig into threads from 2011 or 2012. It became quite on forums because most of the guys learned to live with it or sold the bikes.
