Used V11 Sport
« on: March 17, 2015, 07:41:48 AM »
So the local Guzzi dealer has this 2000 V11 Sport:

http://af1racingaustin.com/used-inventory/2000-v11-sport

From the pictures it looks pretty good, but it does have 56,000 miles on it.  I've always thought these were some of the best looking bikes that Guzzi built, so I'm toying with adding it to the gaggle. I think I can squeeze one more into the garage.  Unfortunately it isn't black so the wife will notice.

SXSW is happening this week so downtown Austin is a real zoo.  It may be a week before I get down to see it which may be a good thing.  If God doesn't want me to have it they'll sell it by then.

Any comments on a V11 of this vintage/mileage?

They are a blast to ride, not too much trouble to have the speedo right at the top of scale.
They do have a problem with loss of oil pressure under hard acceleration but that can be fixed with a Roper plate or by maintaining
the oil on the high side
www.v11lemans.com is a site you should visit and ask about the particular model.
I haven't seen those mufflers on one before so I can't comment on the sound but when you drop it into top at 100 passing a Harley who cares ;D
The milage is not too high, lots of fun left in that one.

The green ones are the fastest but I'm biased.

The last of the truly goofy Gooses.  8). I love mine. Even though it makes me a bit sore to ride it (arthritis), I can't see getting rid of it.

I bought the second V11 Sport that came into Chicago. I loved the bike until it started giving me problems. There were several recalls on this model including, con rods. There were issues with soft valves, and transmissions. With that kind of mileage, I assume the recalls and issues have been addressed. This bike looks nice but, 4500.00 for it is a bit high, IMHO.

nice mufflers! with that mileage the price should be $2500.. I bet it sits on the floor for a long time at $4500.

you've seen my Greenie.

I really love the way it handles, the engine is torquey and balanced.  Red frames are the prettiest for sure.

I'd imagine the Griso and the Bonnie will gather dust once you get it.

yeah......I had a big smile on my face.  Got it from Ghuck's son Brad.  I've more than doubled the miles on it and puked the fuel pump.  Plan to ride it to Austin.

What would be a fair price for a clean 2001 v11 sport with 12k?

FWIW - I sold this last June for ~$4K with about 9K miles.  Had some nice toys on it too.  Think I agree the price should be no more than $3K IMHO.

Been riding on old Honda 400F around town but not very happy.  Thinking very, very seriously about a new V7.

Thanks for all the input.  I did visit the V11 Lemans forum.

Seems the V11 is 'typical Guzzi' - early issues that get sorted out, aftermarket fixes for chronically annoying problems & then relatively trouble free.

So I have two views on the high mileage (and save your 'it's just getting broken in' comments for some other time):

First, with that many miles I would think that all the recalls, common fixes, etc. have been taken care of, or, it's been one of those rare trouble-free Guzzis.  From that point of view it would be a good buy.

Second, with that many miles the bike is on the verge of entering the next level of maintenance fixes any high mileage vehicle faces, which can be expensive.  Along with that I would be more concerned about reliability (although I would have no plans to ride it cross country).

I'll wait & see if the bike is still around next week (Still need to do my taxes, which may make this a moot point).  I think the price may be $1,000 high because of the mileage.

Well, the Bonnie will probably find a new home this spring.  Just doesn't 'speak' to me anymore. Having said that, I did ride it 250 miles this weekend  :D

I had a break in the action today and had a chance to ride the V11.  Rode my 2006 Griso to the dealership so of course I'd have to compare the two.  Mechanically the V11 felt very strong.  Powerwise the V11 was about the same as my Griso.  Transmission was smooth, brakes were solid.

Cosmetically, the bike was nice.  Wear was a bit less than what you would expect for a 15 year old, 60,000 mile bike.  Pretty obvious the bike had been well cared for.

Only obvious flaw was the tach - it didn't work.  I'll need to figure out what it costs to fix it so I can factor it into the cost.

Riding position may be a little tough for me - bars need to be a bit higher. An hour on the bike is no problem, but I'm thinking 4-5 hours could be an issue.

Once I figure out the tach issue & ponder the riding position I'll decide if I want to put an offer on the bike.

If you like the size and weight of the CB400F, but are wanting for more power and character than the V7 is your bike.
The V7 is roomier as well.

I like my little CB400F for short rides, but, the V7, any model (I previously had a 09 V7 Classic, and now a '13 Racer) I enjoy riding all day!

The tach could just be a bad ground issue. Lots of info on the V11 Lemans forum.

Handlebars can be solved with high rise clip ons, or replacing the top triple clamp with a different V11 variation that already has handlebars and risers installed the the PO did to my 2001 V11S.

If a Guzzi dealer (AF1) is selling the bike, why not have them research the VIN for any recall or warranty work done, and insist they fix the tach as a condition of the sale?

Yep, I experienced that aspect.  Part of my test ride was on some twisty roads I'm familiar with.  Was obvious to me that the V11 has more cornering capability than I do.  :D

Hadn't thought about the recalls - will ask on that.  Fixing the tach is under discussion.  They said the the dash/tach comes as a unit so it all would need to be replaced $$$.

I'll talk with them again mid week.

The tach is held in the dash by a couple nuts, as I recall.  It's a five minute job to remove it.  A dealer is selling this?  Doesn't seem to know much.

It's got the short frame & narrower rear tyre so should feel like a gem in the twisties!

Tacho: they don't want to mess with it so it's a replacement, as said they do come out easy.

I'm not sure about your local market but here Guzzi's often sit for ages unless the price is sharp, hope you're in a strong negotiating position if you decide you want it!
