Howling solar storm (can they hear the howl in space?)

Massive solar storm struck last night. Completely overcast here, but they were so intense I still got some pics through the clouds. It's still in progress and should be visible through out the northern USA.

Never heard of Bowerick, but I knew his brother, Harvey Wowbagger. He was a bartender in Duluth. :D

Bow Wow was a famous immortal that stole Thor's spaceship and spent the next thousand years roaming the stars trying to get killed to escape , until he fell in lust with an Earth woman .

It's knocked our HF stuff down and I feel for the commercial guys out across the Pacific and in Asia. The over the pole from Anchorage to Europe will be getting hammered by radiation.
No wonder my hair is gray!

The current view shows a good probability for lights south of Minneapolis. One of my favorite bad shots of lights is from Kansas.
We're supposed to have rain all night. I might go out again anyway. When you can see it through heavy clouds it's got to be extreme!

Seems like the aurora australis was seen as far north as Dunedin last night. It was raining last night, but I think we would be too far north, about 400kms north of Dunedin. Was supposed to have been really impressive.

Yes, the australis mirrors the borealis, according to people who notice those things. It's at a cat4 (8/10) right now. The largest event in a few years, and continuing.

Rode,
Any truth to the story that on a quiet Alaskan night the lights can be actually heard crackle?
Good thing Mother Earth has that iron core. Otherwise we would be toast.
cheers!

No lights south of Chicago last night. Someday that stuff will burn us crispy.

Yes, I think I have heard the lights, as have many others. They sound like someone walking through a pile of leaves made from that crunchy brown cellophane they used to wrap whole wheat bread in. The brain boys though haven't captured and analysed the sound, so they're not saying one way or the other.
It was socked in here last night till about 3AM. Then, through the holes in the clouds I could see very fast moving waves rushing across the sky. I'd already gotten several pics through clouds the previous night, so I didn't go out.
Christchurch was specifically mentioned on CNN as a good venue for viewing. Sorry they didn't show.
