Spark Plug caps-Griso
« on: March 30, 2015, 06:50:08 AM »
All

Are the long reach spark plug caps still prone to damage or have they upgraded them. i replaced mine with the NGK but still tricking removing them without loosening the wire in the cap. Would like to go back to original but i am pretty Hamfisted at  time which led to damage of the first set.

Thanks

Jim B. at Rose Farms showed me how to remove the spark plug caps on my '12 Stelvio the day I bought it.  Loosely loop a wire-tie around the cap at the bend.  Place your finger in the loop and then gently lift, at the same time rock the cap back-and-forth.  After a bit, it will pop right off.  Don't put any pressure on the sides of the cap.  And definitely don't use a pair of pliers on the sides of the cap to pull up and remove it.

My Stelvio, same engine as your Griso, has 27K miles on it and the plugs have been removed several times.  The engine still has the original plug wires and caps.

The caps have been modified but are still essentially the same fragile design. Remove them with a screwdriver through the cooling 'Tunnel' from the front or there is a 'Knack' to getting them out from the top but I still prefer the NGK caps.

Screwdriver through the front hole over the exhaust. Push them up.

I switched to the NGK's after I buggered one of mine. I would kind of prefer the oem's as they have the upper seal rings on them, esspecially as mine is an older a5 with the steel plug tube.

The seal rings do nothing. It's not like they keep water out or anything, there's a bloody great gallery through the head casting you could fly a 747 through. How much water gets through there? A 'Shirtload' is I think the term? ;D

The proper seal on the NGK plug caps fit snugly to the plug insulator and appear to me to be very effective.

There's a long thread from the past that outlines the NGK plug caps.  The readily-available cap that works best for the Stelvio (and I assume other 8Vs)  does not come with the correct-sized seal.  The seal is too big and leaves a space for water to intrude.

The cheapest way to get the proper seal is to buy another type NGK cap that does have the correct seal for the Stelvio plugs, remove those seals and install them on the caps used for the Stelvio. This should be the same for the Griso 8V, I would think. I gave pictures and part numbers. The cost of the caps is very reasonable.

You need the widest wire tie you can find.

A # 12 oring slid onto the sparkplug before the installing the caps fill the void between the cap and the plug nicely. I would post a picture but can't figure how.
